LONDON — The award-winning film &quot;Diamonds in the Sand&quot; made its UK premiere at the prestigious 69th BFI London Film Festival on October 10 and 12, drawing international attention for its poignant exploration of loneliness and connection.Eleven years in the making, the film tells the story of Yoji, a lonely Japanese man who experiences kodokushi (a “lonely death” in Japanese) after his neighbor passes away. Living an isolated life following his divorce, Yoji meets a Filipina caregiver through his mother. His mother’s death drives him to the Philippines, where he discovers the warmth of community and the close-knit bonds of Filipino family life—and more.In attendance during the weekend screenings were Janus Victoria, the film’s director and screenwriter, and Maria Isabel Lopez, the LA-based actress who also stars in the film.Featuring an ensemble cast led by Lily Franky, Kazuko Yoshiyuki, and Maria Isabel Lopez, and produced by Free Stone Productions, Diamonds in the Sand captivated audiences with its striking contrast between Japanese solitude and Filipino communal culture—a theme that resonated strongly with Western viewers.During the Q&amp;A session, Janus Victoria shared her decade-long fascination with kodokushi, which began in 2010 after meeting NHK documentary filmmakers who created a film that “made the whole nation cry.”“What I learned is that differences in culture are expressed in how we use space—and, most especially, sound,” said Victoria, explaining what she focused on highlighting in the film through cinematic technique.Lopez, who plays Minerva, shared her preparation for the role, including learning Japanese for two months with the help of a tutor.“It’s 95% Japanese,” Lopez said. The movie is subtitled in English and was filmed in Japan and the Philippines.“My ex-husband is Japanese, so I already had a bit of conversational background. I went through auditions and script readings, and I’m very proud to be part of a Japanese film that tells such a powerful story.”Before its London debut, Diamonds in the Sand was screened at the Bangkok International Film Festival (September 28 and 30) and the Japanese Film Festival in Vienna (October 8). Earlier this year, it also won Best Debut Film at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy.The BFI London Film Festival, running from October 8 to 19 across the UK, features Diamonds in the Sand in its First Feature Competition category.
