After serving 12 years in prison for killing the man who murdered his wife, he returns home hoping for a fresh start with his daughter Angela (Julie Vega). For years, Angela believed her father was working in Guam, cared for only by her aunt Ester (Marianne de la Riva). </p><p>Determined to leave his violent past behind, Berting chooses a quiet life, working at a pier to support his family. But peace proves evasive. There, he crosses paths with Kiko (Paquito Diaz), a ruthless gang leader operating under the command of the powerful Mr. Llanes (Johnny Wilson). Their group thrives on extortion, fear, and violence, preying on the very community Berting now calls home. </p><p>Every two weeks, Kiko’s gang descend on their neighborhood, demanding money. Threats escalate into violence, culminating in attacks that endanger not only him but also his loved ones. A testament to how the story and the man behind it continues to captivate audiences across generations. </p><p>The film’s success even led to a sequel in 1996, driven by public demand for more of Berting’s story. </p><p>More than just a movie, Isang Bala Ka Lang reflects the legacy of FPJ, widely known as “Da King.” Through decades of filmmaking, FPJ became the face of the everyday Filipino, often portraying characters who fought against corruption, injustice, and oppression. </p><p>His roles were never just about action, but they were mirrors of society. In his films, he gave voice to the struggles of the common man, turning entertainment into a platform for social commentary. </p><p>This legacy earned him some of the highest honors in Philippine arts. He won five FAMAS Awards for Best Actor, securing his place in the FAMAS Hall of Fame in 1988. As a filmmaker, he also showcased his brilliance behind the camera, winning Best Director for <em>Ang Padrino</em> and <em>Kahit Butas ng Karayom, Papasukin Ko</em>.
