The Ransom Collective shares why ‘Tongue Tied’ became their return track

After a four-year hiatus, local indie folk band The Ransom Collective returns with “Tongue Tied,” a new single that captures the feeling of infatuation with a refreshing bossa-tinged sound.Formed in 2013, the band consists of Kian Ransom (guitar), Redd Claudio (drums), Jermaine Choa Peck (percussion), Leah Halili (bass), Lily Gonzales (keyboards), and Muriel Gonzales (violin). The group said that “Tongue Tied” was first written in 2020, with production only finished in late 2025.In a media roundtable with the band, Kian shared why “Tongue Tied” felt like the right song to reintroduce the group after their break, describing it as both familiar and refreshing while staying true to the core sound of The Ransom Collective.“So for me, I think like you described, it&#x27;s kind of a familiar but refreshing song. I think that&#x27;s why it really felt like a good fit. I mean, aside from the obvious that it was like the only song that we had still in the chamber and it was already partially recorded. It felt right to finish it, but I think this song works really well because a lot of people were saying or I&#x27;ve heard some people say like, oh, it still sounds kind of like TRC from the pre-pandemic era and it&#x27;s because it kind of is,” Kian recalled.Kian also said there was no real intention for &quot;Tongue Tied&quot; to become their comeback track, as the song simply found its way back to the band at the right time.“It is actually a little bit of like dusted off the shelf and actually is truly from that era of our lives, but with some modern touches. And I think you could also hear a little bit of the way we&#x27;ve matured — both as like individuals and as musicians — kind of sprinkled into how this song was arranged,” he recounted.“Yeah, I don&#x27;t think there was any real intentionality about this song being like the song. It just kind of worked out that way and I think it was just kind of meant to be,” Kian added.When asked if the creative process felt different from their previous releases, Kian described working on the track as building a puzzle, as the band collaborated with other producers while the members were geographically separated and busy with individual commitments.“For me, yeah, it was very different. It was more like a puzzle. Like we really liked the intro and the chorus and then even the outro was a puzzle. And then fitting together those indie folk with the bossa nova style was a puzzle,” he said.“And then this is the first song where we really worked with other producers to kind of help us get it across the finish line, largely because  we were geographically separated and a lot of us were really busy with different family and work commitments,” Kian added.He also expressed appreciation for working with their producers on the track, saying their experience helped unlock the band’s strengths and bring a fresh perspective to the song.“So this is the first time we worked with some producers to kind of help us finish it out, which was a different experience, but I think it was actually really cool working with producers and probably something I would be down to do going forward because they really help, especially with their experience,” he remarked.“Producers really help and know how to kind of unlock the best bits of you and to bring all the different strengths of different band members together that you might not see yourself or as a band when you already have a preconceived notion of what the song should or shouldn&#x27;t be.
