Baron Geisler’s real-life journey behind “Tabing Ilog,” “Incognito,” and “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo”

As someone who’s lived through different phases of fame, struggle, and growth, Baron Geisler has learned to hold his past more gently, knowing that the things that hurt him are just as much a part of his story as the things that helped him grow. He shares that outlook with Bianca Gonzalez, who opens this episode of &quot;BRGY&quot; with her own thoughts on detours and second chances.Bianca congratulates him on his current role as Rockyboy Mondragon in <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/studios/tv/batangquiapo">&quot;FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,&quot; </a>which Baron accepts with gratitude, saying every good thing happening to him now is “only by God’s grace,” before recalling that he was about to return to Cebu—where he and his Cebuana wife Jamie Evangelista are based—after wrapping up <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/studios/tv/incognito">&quot;Incognito&quot;</a> when Coco Martin reached out and invited him to join the series. Of course, there&#x27;s pride in being part of one of the most established and biggest primetime teleseryes today. Getting to work on a show of that scale definitely matters to him. But prior to &quot;FPJ&#x27;s Batang Quiapo,&quot; his true redemption arc in his career unfolded through the military-action series &quot;Incognito,&quot; where he was given a chance to return to primetime after years of trying to rebuild his footing. ABS-CBN trusted him with a role that wasn’t the usual antagonist he had long been associated with. Playing the beloved military surgeon and sniper Miguel Tecson became a turning point for him because the character felt close to his own life. Miguel was a good friend, a loving husband and father, and a dependable soldier who carried the same weight of wanting to give his family the best, which made the work feel both familiar and therapeutic.“He was close to me kasi pareho kaming nagre-recover, pareho kami ng pinagdaanan,” he muses. To recall, the character also had to face the darker parts of his life while trying to redeem himself as a father, a journey that mirrors some of the hurdles Baron had to outgrow in real life.They filmed the series for almost a year, long enough for the immersion to help him heal in ways he didn’t expect. He also credits his co-stars, especially Ian Veneracion, Daniel Padilla, and Richard Gutierrez for grounding him through deep conversations that broke down whatever pressure he still felt to prove himself.&quot;Dito ko natutunan na i-accept &#x27;yung sarili ko for who I am. I don&#x27;t have to prove to these people that I&#x27;m this or that. Kasi binasag na nila kaagad ako,&quot; reflects Baron. Looking back, he knows that &quot;Incognito&quot; was a comeback that sparked a clearer sense of himself. At one point in the interview, Bianca pulls out a whiteboard for a flashback game, making Baron laugh as he feels “sobrang luma” in the industry, and then eventually agrees that longevity really is a blessing. In this game, he must identify the title of the show he’s done through the years based on photo clues flashed on the screen. Baron starts with the first set of pictures showing Angelica Panganiban, John Prats, and Stefano Mori, which immediately takes him back to ABS-CBN&#x27;s kiddie gag show &quot;Ang TV&quot; in 1995 when he was just turning 13 and auditioning almost by accident after his brother’s best friend signed him up on a whim. He recalls walking in as a kid who didn’t know how to sing or dance—taekwondo was the only thing he considered himself good at then (fun fact: he even competed in national taekwondo tournaments)—yet he still ended up singing “Bizarre Love Triangle” and dancing “kahit parang katorse ang paa ko.” The one who discovered and handpicked him after that adorable audition was David Fabros. “Sir Dave, thank you, dahil sa’yo naging artista po ako,” he says, looking straight at the camera.He went on to be part of &quot;Ang TV&quot; for two years. Bianca asks if he imagined staying longer at that time, he says it never crossed his mind. For Baron, was all just play, &quot;Starstruck din ako sa mga actors na sikat na sikat no&#x27;ng time na &#x27;yun.&quot; Even when he eventually worked with the biggest &#x27;90s teen stars, the likes of Judy Ann Santos, Diether Ocampo, and the late Rico Yan in &quot;Gimik,” where he played Choi Ledesma, Baron says he still didn’t feel like a celebrity. He only felt that his co-actors were the stars, and he was just somebody trying to keep up. He recalls how ABS-CBN brought in the best mentors and how they all had to learn fast, but he also remembers putting his co-stars on a pedestal, which  compelled him to chase an invisible standard. Looking at it now, Baron realizes he never needed to compete with anyone in the first place.The next set of photos brings Baron to a project he still looks back on with so much affection. “Paborito ko ’tong show na ’to,” he says when photos from the iconic youth-oriented show <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/articles-photos/major-throwback-the-cast-of-1999-tabing-ilog-in-22-photos-14274">&quot;Tabing Ilog&quot;</a> flashes on screen, a project he shared with Jodi Sta. Maria, John Lloyd Cruz, Patrick Garcia, Desiree del Valle, Paolo Contis, Paula Peralejo, and Kaye Abad. They were that era’s stars-to-watch-out-for! At this stage of his career, he still didn&#x27;t see himself as “the actor” among actors. They were all friends, he says, with a bit of healthy competition, but what he remembers most is the learning. &quot;It was a classroom, parang doon kami nagkolehiyo eh,” he adds, noting how director Malu L. Sevilla, the staff, and the crew shaped their discipline and craft at a time when teen dramas were just beginning to define a generation.However, the fame that followed was overwhelming for someone so young, and Baron recalls the shift vividly. “Nagugulat ako, na parang nawala si Baron Geisler, the son of my mom and dad and the brother of Donny Geisler. And nagulat na lang ako &#x27;pag nasa mall kami, parang kaming The Beatles.” Mall shows would fill up in seconds in a time before social media when seeing artists in person felt like a rare event. &quot;Hinahabol talaga kami [ng fans]. Kasi no&#x27;ng time namin, hindi pa uso ang social media, word of mouth lang, radyo. Pero makikita mo mas puno pa ang mall noon kaysa ngayon.&quot; The fame came fast and he struggled to hold it together at that age. He remembers out-of-town shows would leave him with wads of cash he didn’t know what to do with, sometimes giving them away on the street because he felt he didn’t deserve to be paid that much. Baron admits he failed to handle those years well, but he talks about it now without blame and instead treats it as part of the learning curve that came with growing up in front of the cameras.From &quot;Tabing Ilog,&quot; his “college” years on TV, they move to his film &quot;Anak,&quot; which he describes as his “PhD-level role.” Baron recalls how working with icons like Joel Torre and Vilma Santos, along with one of that era’s biggest next-generation actresses, Claudine Barretto, made him understand the depth of acting. “Dito pumasok ’yung, ‘Ay, trabaho na ’to.’ And I think diyan sa movie na ’yan ako nabigyan ng break at nakita ’yung acting range ko,” he tells Bianca.But more than the prestige of working with them, he remembers the warmth on set. Vilma treated him like her own son, “Sobrang sweet niya. Ako ’yung nahihiya kasi kini-kiss niya ako na parang anak, eh feeling ko ang pawis ko at ang baho ko, pero kini-kiss ako ng isang Vilma Santos. Sobrang heartwarming!” he recounts, adding that Claudine treated him the same, “She would call me ‘baby bro.’ [She would ask me], ‘Kumain ka na ba?’ May pizza ’yan, papakainin ako.”&quot;Anak&quot; was definitely Baron’s first major test as an actor, one that pushed him forward and showed him just how much room he had to grow. And when you look back at everything that came before it—the accidental &quot;Ang TV&quot; audition, the whirlwind teen-idol years—and the ups and downs and redemption that came after, you see that the real accolade isn’t the spotlight, but the resilience and clarity he gathered from every chapter.
