Throwback: The stars of “Be My Lady” (2016)

ABS-CBN opened 2016 with a light romantic comedy that sheds light on interracial relationships in &quot;Be My Lady.&quot;Pinang (Erich Gonzales) is a simple barrio girl from the Philippines who dreams of working abroad.  Her love life has taken a back seat to providing a better life for her family. Pinang grew up to a simple family with big dreams. To make ends meet, her mother Marcy (Janice De Belen) works in Singapore and tries her luck there in hopes of earning money to reclaim the piece of land her husband Emil (Al Tantay) used to own and uses for farming. But things will not go her way as an unfortunate incident paves way for her to get deported. Thousands of miles away is Phil (Daniel Matsunaga), a Brazilian playboy living in Singapore, who has broken too many women’s hearts. Phil grew up in a very western and liberated environment. He is independent and lives a very comfortable life with his mother Chelsea (Priscilla Mereilles) in Singapore. A wedding of a dear friend suddenly brings him to the Philippines, which also gives him the long-awaited chance of finding his childhood nanny who he want to make amends with. As he searches for a person very dear to him in his past, Phil also finds the woman who will make his heart skip a beat like no other.When Pinang and Phil cross paths, a collision of cultures ensues – different languages, different backgrounds, and different perspectives.  One has conservative Filipino values while the other is as liberated as can be. An unlikely friendship blossoms between them and as they start to unpeel each other’s layers, secrets from the past are also revealed.  They soon realize that their lives are actually more entwined than they can imagine. In the end, will the language of love speak to their hearts?Directed by Theodore Boborol, &quot;Be My Lady&quot; also starred Yayo Aguila, Almira Muhlach, Yves Flores, Karen Dematera, MJ Cayabyab, RK Bagatsing, Devon Seron, Karen Reyes, Mike Lloren, Ana Abad Santos, Perry Escano, Marife Necesito and the comedy trio No Direction.
