<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1749344870007Thumb - 2025-06-08T090750.781.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>Early this year, news about nearly 200 Filipinos being rescued from illegal scam centers operating in Myanmar and being repatriated to the Philippines made headlines and stirred alarm in many of us.</p><p>Reportedly, they were enticed with false promises of high-paying, decent jobs as customer service or chat support agents in Thailand, only to find out that they would work in online scam hubs in Myanmar—just like what happened to Nadia, one of the survivors and the letter sender of the “<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/studios/tv/maalaala-mo-kaya" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong><u><em>Maalaala Mo Kaya</em></u></strong></a>” episode tagged &quot;Trafficked Story Part 1 (SIM Card)” impressively portrayed by Bela Padilla.</p><p>The episode commenced with Nadia having a heated altercation with her abusive husband, Ronald (Kean Cipriano), which was witnessed by their two very young children. Since he seemed to have failed in supporting their family financially, Nadia was compelled to work in Saudi Arabia for five years and leave their kids under his care. She tried working as a caregiver, massage therapist, and a maid and then she decided to move to Dubai, where she became a credit card and loan officer and even got a second chance in love.</p><p>Despite having a love life, her children and the fulfillment of her dreams for her family were still her top priority. Thus, she decided to invest her hard-earned money in cryptocurrency, believing that it would be easier for her to leverage her savings, only to end up losing all of it after being scammed. Just when she thought that it was her only problem, her heart further shattered upon learning that her husband sold the land that she bought.</p><p>Her partner, Yadid, tried to stop her from pursuing her plan of working in Thailand since he had a bad feeling about it, and he vowed to help her land a job at the hotel where he was working. She got rejected, so she took it as a sign to go to Thailand and push through with the cosmetics agent job that she saw online.</p><div><iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QpCAOijKS-c" title="Nadia, nabiktima ng human trafficking | Sim Card | Maalaala Mo Kaya" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>Unfortunately, she was deceived by her recruiter because instead of Thailand, she was transported to Myanmar via a backdoor route and was brought to a secluded online scam center where she was welcomed by a group of armed men, two of whom gave her a brief orientation on what her real job would be—an online scammer. Perplexed, she pleaded with them to just return her to Dubai, but they told her that she would have to pay them back the $300,000 that they’d spent in order for her to get there.</p><p>Since they knew that it would be impossible for her to shell out that whopping amount, they told her that she would have to work for them for three months because that should be enough to cover all her transportation expenses. However, if she were to attempt to disobey them, then they would have to lock her up. Thus, she was left with no other options but to follow everything they’d told her to do. Aside from the fact that it&#x27;s illegal, she knew all too well how devastating it was to be tricked because she used to be a victim of crypto scam.</p><p>There, Nadia met a Ugandan woman named Afiya, who guided and helped her out on her first few days on the job since they were roommates and seatmates, as well as a group of Filipinos with whom she was able to establish a bond with as they took their meals together ever since her first day.</p><div><iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/02W9o6WUA5I" title="Nadia, nakausap ang ibang mga Pilipino sa scam company | Sim Card | Maalaala Mo Kaya" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>Far from the cosmetics agent position initially offered to her by her recruiter, Xiao, Nadia and her colleagues were tasked to scam people, usually rich people from the United States, Europe, and China, via an online dating app. They had to create a fake account using the photos of a random person with low followers and make them fall in love with them through chat until they&#x27;re able to completely gain their trust. Once the victim fell into their lair, it would be the time that they would introduce cryptocurrency to them and persuade them to invest.</p><p>Each one of them was given the quota of five victims per month, which they had to attain if they didn&#x27;t want to get punished. Aside from their monthly salary, they would also get a 7% commission for every income that they would bring in to the company, which made it quite hard for the other Pinoys there to leave the job.</p><p>She might not have completed her first-ever shift yet, but Nadia had to be sent already to the hospital after suddenly passing out due to dehydration and severe fatigue. Once again, she pleaded with the translator, Dalmar, to help her get out of the hub for her to be able to go home. But as much as he wanted to help, he also couldn&#x27;t do anything about her situation since he was also trapped there just like everyone else. The least that he could do for her was to lend her his phone and allow him to contact her family since it was her birthday.</p><div><iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/o8azKvScgBM" title="Nadia, gumawa ng paraan para makauwi sa Pilipinas | Sim Card | Maalaala Mo Kaya" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>However, instead of calling her family, Nadia reached out to Yadid to ask for his help by telling him to pay 2,000 dirhams to the recruitment agency in order for her to be finally set free, as well as to Xiao to beg her to help her. Nadia managed to prolong her hospital confinement for a few days until she was already well and fit to work again. On her return, she had witnessed three of her workmates being beaten up after apparently not being able to reach their monthly quota, which made her more eager to leave that place.</p><p>Just when Nadia thought that she would finally be able to go home after Yadid informed her that he had already settled the payment to the recruiter and Xiao told her via text that she was able to find a replacement for her, little did she know that her greatest nightmare was just about to start. Instead of bringing her to the airport, she was transported by the driver to the dreaded Titan Park, another online scamming hub but with harsher living and working conditions compared to Venus Park.</p><div><iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/afzEOgXV794" title="Nadia, mas pinahirapan nang ilipat sa ibang compound | Sim Card | Maalaala Mo Kaya" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>Upon her arrival, she was immediately assaulted by one of the men who welcomed her, especially when she attempted to run away from them multiple times. They brought her into the establishment hellish torture chamber and locked her inside one of the rooms, which was totally horrible compared to the one she stayed in at Venus Park. It didn’t only lack proper lighting, ventilation, and clean water, but it was also untidy, with stains of blood scattered around the room and even pieces of hair and nail on the floor, which absolutely grossed out Nadia.</p><p>Since there were still no food rations and she was already hungry, Nadia simply contented herself with the bottled water and bread she was able to keep in her luggage. The episode ended with her attempting to destroy the railings on the window of her room in her desperate move to escape.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Comments on and takeaways from the episode</strong></div><p>After several months or almost a year after she last worked on a Kapamilya teleserye, Bela Padilla is once again able to showcase her astounding dramatic chops through her remarkable stint via this latest episode of “MMK.” She indeed nailed her portrayal of Nadia, the letter sender and one of the OFWs who were rescued from an online scamming operation in Myanmar.</p><p>She truly had done a great job in stirring the emotions of the viewers through her impressive acting skills, being able to capture and display the pain, sadness, animosity, and sufferings of her character. While she got us beyond impressed with how she compellingly delivered her lines with matching emotions, she also amazed us in those scenes wherein she didn&#x27;t have any lines and it was only her eyes, facial expressions, and movements that did the talking and the piercing of the audiences hearts.</p><p>The harrowing story of Nadia is also the story of many Filipinos who are dreaming of giving their families better and comfortable lives. Thus, they&#x27;re willing to do everything they can in order to achieve it, even though it means having to sacrifice their own safety and well-being, as well as to go the distance in pursuit of better opportunities.</p><p>While there&#x27;s definitely nothing wrong in hoping for a better life, may this be a warning for us to be extra cautious about the opportunities that we take because, as the old adage says, &quot;Not all that glitters is gold.&quot; It&#x27;s because, sometimes, the things we&#x27;re hoping for could be the same reasons why our lives will be put in danger instead of
