JM De Guzman recalls his exit from “All of Me,” “Init Sa Magdamag” set accident and more teleserye BTS moments

Maybe it’s his quiet intensity, or the way he makes every line feel honest and deeply human, but there&#x27;s something about JM De Guzman’s performances that stay with you. Audiences first saw his leading man potential in &quot;Mula Sa Puso,&quot; which was immediately followed by his iconic role in &quot;<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/studios/tv/2025/5/16/throwback-jm-de-guzman-in-angelito-batang-ama-0108">Angelito: Batang Ama</a>,&quot;  and from there, he steadily carved out a career defined by his impeccable range. Through the years, JM’s filmography has grown into a rich oeuvre of well-loved teleseryes and acclaimed indie films. So in this <a href="http://chat.abs-cbn.com">Kapamilya Chat</a> challenge, he takes a fun tour down memory lane as he tries to identify scenes from his past work using cropped screenshots as tiny clues.  Let&#x27;s see if he can recognize which role or project the photos came from. It’s a fun test of memory, but also a nice reminder of just how many unforgettable characters he’s brought to life over the years. JM felt the wave of nostalgia as soon as the first photo appeared, bringing him back to playing Gabriel Maglayon in the 2011 remake of the classic drama &quot;Mula Sa Puso,&quot; which he admits came with its own set of pressure, since it was originally portrayed by the late Rico Yan. &quot;Nahirapan ako sa role na &#x27;yan kasi role &#x27;yan ng isa sa mga iniidolo natin, si Rico Yan tapos gagampanan ko, so malaking sapatos na isusuot &#x27;yon,&quot; shared JM, who even prayed for Rico’s spiritual guidance as he tried to do justice to the character. The next zoomed-in image showed a newborn baby, which he instantly recognized as a scene from &quot;<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/studios/tv/2025/5/16/throwback-jm-de-guzman-in-angelito-batang-ama-0108">Angelito: Batang Ama</a>,&quot; where he played the titular role at just 19 years old. This project remains especially close to his heart, not only because of how well it resonated with viewers but because of the experience itself on set.  &quot;&#x27;Pag naaalala ko &#x27;yong ‘Angelito,’ lagi kong naaalala &#x27;yong [scene na] nasa kalye ako sa gitna ng init ng araw tapos may hawak akong baby, tumatakbo ako,&quot; he looked back, adding that they filmed the sequence for an entire day. And yes, in case you’re wondering, it was a real baby in his arms most of the time, which meant he had to be extra careful and make sure the baby was safe and comfortable throughout the take. &quot;Kasi siyempre kailangan nating pagpahingahin at kailangan alagaan ang baby.&quot; It was tough, but as a young actor with boundless energy back then, he got through it without feeling too tired. &quot;Isa sa defining moments in my life,” that’s how JM described the afternoon drama &quot;Araw Gabi,&quot; his comeback project after completing rehabilitation. &quot;Nabigyan ako ng lead role ulit tapos chance na makatrabaho si Barbie [Imperial].&quot; Adding to the significance of the show, it was directed by Theodore “Ted” Boborol, the same director who helmed &quot;<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/studios/tv/2025/5/16/throwback-jm-de-guzman-in-angelito-batang-ama-0108">Angelito: Batang Ama</a>.&quot;  “Sana all may jawline,” he quipped after being shown a photo of his much leaner self as Edong in the teleserye &quot;<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/studios/tv/2024/11/26/throwback-the-cast-of-all-of-me-2015-1553">All of Me</a>.&quot; From that funny remark, JM got candid, saying he was eventually pulled from the show due to personal struggles with his mental health. &quot;Natanggal ako sa show na ‘yan. Nagkaroon ako ng problema. Hindi ko kinaya &#x27;yong emotions ng character... Sobrang bigat at masyado ‘ata akong nag-method [acting]. Masyado kong pinasok &#x27;yong character tapos hindi ko kinaya,&quot; he divulged. JM used to dive too deep into his roles without knowing how to set boundaries, but over time, with more experience and growth,  he eventually figured out a process that allows him to protect his mental space while still delivering the demands of the role.  Eventually, JM found himself exploring the bad guy archetype, and one of the most intense villains he&#x27;s played was the abusive Peterson Alvarez in &quot;Init Sa Magdamag,&quot; in which he did several violent confrontations with his on-screen partner Yam Concepcion, one of which resulted in an actual injury. &quot;Pumutok &#x27;yong ulo ko, tinahi, kasi natamaan ni Yam ng hanger,&quot; he recalled, laughing. Despite the four stitches on his forehead, he had to keep filming since they were racing against time. &quot;Kailangan mag-shoot... So, may tahi ito, hindi ako makasigaw kasi baka bumuka &#x27;yung tahi. Minake-up-an lang &#x27;yong tahi tapos &#x27;pag intense &#x27;yong scenes, [mouth and jaw] lang &#x27;yong gumagalaw sa akin,&quot; he shared.  &quot;Init Sa Magdamag&quot; was also one of the first ABS-CBN dramas to resume production during the height of the pandemic, which meant the whole team had to stay on-site for lock-in taping. JM said the setup had its pros and cons, but he appreciates how it helped everyone stay focused on their characters since there were no outside distractions. The signal was weak in their location, so his routine was mostly work, bonding with the cast, and squeezing in workouts with co-star Gerald Anderson during breaks. Before the pandemic hit in 2020, JM worked on the family drama series “Pamilya Ko,” where he played Chico Mabunga. The show was cancelled due to the pandemic lockdown, and he clearly remembers their last day on set, &quot;Naaalala ko, nagsho-shoot kami tapos binalita sa amin na, &#x27;Mag-uwian na kayo, may pandemic.&#x27; Tapos binalita sa amin na hindi na matatapos &#x27;yong show.&quot; It was definitely a sad time for him, &quot;Nakakalungkot, maganda pa naman &#x27;yong casting kasi ang dami namin na magkakapatid d&#x27;yan, tapos si Nanay Sylvia [Sanchez] at saka si Tyong Joey Marquez, magkakasama kami sa set masaya lang.&quot; And if he were to give the Mabunga family their own ending, JM would want something happy for the whole family, and for the womanizing patriarch played by Joey to finally change his ways. And then there was a hint of regret in JM’s voice when shown a photo of himself as Atty. Alexander Lualhati from &quot;<a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/linlang2023/articles-videos/10-times-alex-revealed-his-true-colors-to-juliana-in-linlang-theteleserye-version-22500">Linlang</a>,&quot; because even though the role earned him a lot of praise, he felt like he didn’t give everything he had. &quot;To be honest, mas kaya ko pang may maibigay. May mga gano&#x27;ng projects minsan, eh, na &#x27;pag pinanood mo parang, &#x27;Kaya ko pang pigain &#x27;to, ah.&#x27;&quot;  It was also around that time he started gaining weight, which he wishes he had managed better early on. Still, he’s grateful for the kind words he received and gives credit to the creative team and his co-stars, especially Kaila Estrada who played his wife, as their performances pushed him to bring more to his own.
