Gerald Anderson takes on archery and airsoft, reflects on hitting the bullseye in showbiz and real life

Gerald Anderson lives and breathes action, not only through his teleseryes, like the currently airing <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/studios/tv/sins-of-the-father">&quot;Sins of the Father,&quot;</a> but also through his intensely active lifestyle and passion for sports. While we’ve been glued to his every move in his latest series, this episode of digital lifestyle talk show &quot;Are You G&quot; gives us a chance to see the man behind the character—up close, focused, and right in his element. Watching the episode, you’d easily be drawn to the sport yourself, with how engaged he and &quot;Are You G&quot; host MJ Felipe were throughout the session. The segment showed them learning the basics, starting with wearing the arm guard to protect the arm against the forceful snap of the bowstring, which, if mishandled, could cause bruising or cuts. They then moved on to learning finger placement, how to maintain proper form, and the correct ways drawing and releasing the string. Despite a few fumbles during his initial attempts, Gerald eventually got his rhythm and found the experience to be a form of stress relief. This mirrors his early days in showbiz, which, he admitted, weren’t always smooth sailing. “I was 17 years old, paglabas ng ‘PBB,’ ginawa kaming lead agad sa isang teleserye at ’yong bigat n’on na kailangan mong bitbitin ay overwhelming. Hindi mo pa alam ’yong ginagawa mo sa buhay mo,” he shared. Even though he prepared for his first acting project and first lead role, &quot;Sana Maulit Muli,&quot; by going through workshops, Gerald acknowledged that no amount of preparation could truly equip someone for an entirely new world they’re stepping into. Still, he embraced the challenge head-on. And now he&#x27;s here, looking forward to celebrating his 20th showbiz anniversary next year. Since entering the spotlight as a teenage heartthrob in the first “Pinoy Big Brother” teen edition in 2006, Gerald has carved a path marked by steady growth and heavy-hitting roles. What’s kept him going, he says, is his love for the challenge. In every project he takes on, there always has to be something that pushes him.  “When you do something new, huwag magpadala sa fear mo. Use it as a friend saying, ‘You have to prepare for this and you can do that,’” he said. <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/articles-photos/throwback-the-cast-of-tayong-dalawa-2009-14409">&quot;Tayong Dalawa&quot; </a>(2009) was a turning point in his career, where he approached acting with a more mature mindset and began treating it as a passion rather than a path to popularity. “Forget the fanfare, ’yong kasikatan. Mas importante is ’yong output mo.” &quot;Tayong Dalawa&quot; marked that realization, which he fully applied in <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/studios/tv/2025/7/24/throwback-gerald-anderson-and-jessy-mendiola-in-budoy-2011-0104">&quot;Budoy&quot;</a> (2011) with a stronger sense of purpose and direction. He considers the show a personal bulls-eye, being his first lead role without a love team, and a project that pushed him to use his talent for something more meaningful. That’s when he realized he wanted to take on shows with social relevance, the kind that could leave audiences not just entertained but also more aware. He’s had his fair share of bulls-eyes since then, including the critically acclaimed film &quot;On the Job&quot; and he hopes &quot;Sins of the Father&quot; hits that same mark in terms of social impact. While he personally hasn’t been a victim of scams, which is the series&#x27; central theme, Gerald shared that some of his friends have experienced it firsthand. That makes him even more driven to tell this story right, to highlight how scams affect victims, and more importantly, to help viewers recognize the red flags before it’s too late. Off-cam, Gerald’s energy carries over into his lifestyle. His passion for fitness inspired one of his biggest investments to date—his own gym business, which he chose not just for profit but because it’s close to his heart. He named it “The Th3rd Floor,” a nod to the mini gym he used to have on the third floor of his house. It was where he first gained confidence in working out, away from the often-intimidating atmosphere of a commercial gym. That’s exactly what he now wants his gym members to feel—a sense of comfort and belonging. And for Gerald, that community spirit is what truly sets The Th3rd Floor apart. The indoor airsoft portion of the episode wasn’t much of a challenge for Gerald, who has been practicing shooting for the past five years. He shared that he had to master gun-firing for the military-themed series &quot;A Soldier’s Heart&quot; (2020), where he and his co-stars underwent real-life military training.  That experience also opened the door for his deeper involvement with the Philippine Army and Philippine Coast Guard, where he actively joins relief operations and basketball clinics. When asked where his heart for uniformed service comes from, he reflected that it’s driven by a strong sense of duty to serve and protect, then added, “It’s also showing the next generation na huwag lang tayong puro social media. Don’t enjoy just the superficial things in life—you also have to have a sense of duty and responsibility.” For him, there are many ways to serve, even through something as simple as being aware of what’s happening in the world. Gerald credits his sense of service to his father, who was a member of the US Navy, and his generosity to his mother, who raised him with a heart for helping others. As for his athletic drive, he admitted that neither of his parents were particularly sporty, so he believes he just developed his love for physical activity on his own.  Wrapping up the episode, Gerald reflected on how archery reminded him a lot of life.
