In the years of watching teleseryes, we have probably been accustomed to seeing families being depicted with only one to three children—not until “Pamilya Ko” was released in September 2019 and introduced avid Kapamilya viewers to the relatively huge and happy household of the Mabunga family, comprised of a pair of loving parents and eight gregarious children! The family drama served as an opener to the Primetime Bida block of ABS-CBN since it was aired at 6PM preceding the evening newscast “TV Patrol.” It follows the story of the Mabunga family led by couple Fernan (Joey Marquez) and Luz (Sylvia Sanchez), who are proud parents to their lovable children Chico (JM de Guzman), Beri (Kiko Estrada), Apol (Kid Yambao), Persi (Jairus Aquino), Peachy (Maris Racal), Lemon (Kira Balinger), Cherry (Mutya Orquia), and Pongky (Raikko Mateo). Since their nicknames were inspired by fruits, their parents fondly call them “Fruit Salad,” especially everytime Luz would call them to eat—much to the delight of viewers.They may be perceived as a beautiful family since they seem to be always brimming with love, happiness, and good vibes, but just like any families, the Mabungas also have their share of misunderstandings, challenges, and flaws, which only make their bond stronger and tighter. Throughout its six-month run from September 2019 to March 2020, we witnessed them tackle internal problems that Filipino families face—such as infidelity, tragedies, and altercations—and how they were always bound together by forgiveness, acceptance, and genuine love no matter what happened. While viewers were given a glimpse of their adorable dynamics as a close-knit family in the pilot episode, we got to learn about the complex issues that they had to navigate individually and collectively in the succeeding episodes, as well as the root causes behind each one of those. Fernan might be deemed an exemplary father or “ulirang ama,” yet he was actually involved in an illicit affair with a fellow overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Italy, Loida (Irma Adlawan), which completely took a toll on his relationship with Luz and their children. It was also revealed that the reasons why Chico appeared to be treated quite differently by Luz were because he was the son of Fernan with his ex-flame Elena (Rosanna Roces), as well as that he was the companion of his late brother Jack in the accident that claimed his life when they were still kids.  Other members of the Mabunga family had also encountered problems in their respective lives, which they were able to overcome with the help of their parents and siblings who’d always got their back through whatever. We may not be able to see how their story ended, but we’re certain that it would have been good, happy, and satisfying since we always believe that everything’s going to be okay in the end and everything we’ve gone through—either good or bad—are parts of our journeys. “Pamilya Ko” still remains one of the most memorable series that ABS-CBN Studios has ever released in recent times. From the script and storytelling to the chemistry and performances of the actors—all were done so well.  Also part of the ensemble were Arci Muñoz, Alyssa Muhlach, Perla Bautista, Kit Thompson, Marco Gallo, JC De Vera, Dominic Roque, Nathalie Hart, Heaven Peralejo, and many more. The scenes may tend to get very dramatic and intense, but the vibe off cam was quite different as seen in these photos of the cast in this gallery.
