The decades-long history of Atty. Jose Sison's iconic legal drama anthology "Ipaglaban Mo!"

<p>For many Filipinos who grew up during the golden age of television, <em>&quot;Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> was a staple in their watch list. The legal drama anthology turned real-life court cases into compelling dramatizations while empowering Filipino viewers with better understanding of their rights and obligations with the law.  </p><p>With the passing of the show&#x27;s main man, Atty. Jose Sison, on July 23, it truly feels like the end of an era. In honor of his legacy, we&#x27;re looking back at the history and journey of the iconic program that became synonymous with his name. </p><p>Drawing inspiration from actual cases brought before, and ultimately decided by, the Supreme Court, <em>&quot;Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> went on to become one of the longest-running and highest-rated drama anthologies in Philippine television, earning several recognitions from the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) and PMPC Star Awards for TV.  </p><p>The show&#x27;s earliest episodes focused on family-related cases, and aimed to educate viewers about their legal rights and options. In his newspaper column, Atty. Jose shared that the <em>&quot;Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> series was born after some of his colleagues in the media saw the potential of his legal column to become a TV show &quot;because of the common touch and easily understandable manner in which the highly technical and somewhat complicated decisions are presented.&quot; </p><p>The program first aired on November 20, 1988, on a government-owned television network under the original title <em>&quot;Kapag Nasa Katwiran... Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> (which would later become its iconic catchphrase).  </p><p>In 1992, it moved to ABS-CBN as a block timer with the slightly modified title <em>&quot;Kapag May Katwiran... Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> The following year, it became an ABS-CBN-produced program and remained on the air until its final episode in 1999. </p><p>Still a student when the show first aired on TV, Jose&#x27;s son, Jopet, was inspired by his father&#x27;s work and used to accompany him during tapings. Then, in 2013, he officially joined Atty. Jose as co-host when <em>&quot;Kapag May Katwiran... Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> returned to television as a blocktimer on another news channel. The revival, however, ran for only three months. </p><p>In June 2014, still hosted by Atty. Jose and Jopet, the show had its rebirth on ABS-CBN with the shorter title <em>&quot;Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> Its comeback episode, <em>&quot;Hindi Ko Sinasadya, Yaya,&quot;</em> tackled the legal complications faced by a couple after their young son accidentally shot their nanny while playing with his father&#x27;s gun. </p><div> </div><div><iframe width="966" height="543" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DZTOCp3LC28" title="Hindi Ko Sinasadya Yaya June 7, 2014 Teaser | Ipaglaban Mo Teaser" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div><br/></div><p>The program thrived, with replays also airing on DZMM TeleRadyo, until 2020, when<em> &quot;Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> stopped producing fresh episodes due to quarantine restrictions amid the pandemic. Its last taped episode, <em>&quot;Ninong,&quot; </em>followed a married couple caught up in a crime after extending a helping hand to the husband&#x27;s godfather. </p><div> </div><div><iframe width="966" height="543" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/lnPyAyLViQE" title="Ninong | Ipaglaban Mo Recap" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div> </div><p>Although no new episodes were produced after 2020, the show continued its re-airings across various channels until 2024. Throughout its run, Atty. Jose served as more than just the face of<em> &quot;Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> as he also played an active role in ensuring that each story remained legally accurate while being effectively translated into compelling episodes for television.  </p><p>In a previous interview with an entertainment website, former production manager Rizza Gonzales Ebriega revealed that after selecting the cases to adapt, the production team would consult Atty. Jose and his son Jopet to ensure the proposed dramatizations remained faithful to the real-life legal proceedings. </p><p>After the discussion, Atty. Jose would write about the selected cases in his newspaper column. Only after the article was published would the writers proceed with completing the script. It reflects how closely involved Atty. Jose was in the production. </p><p>For the spiels and voice-overs, which had become a staple of <em>&quot;Ipaglaban Mo!,&quot;</em> it was actually Atty. The first film, <em>&quot;Kapag May Katwiran... Ipaglaban Mo: The Movie,&quot;</em> was released in 1995 and featured back-to-back stories, starring Sharmaine Arnaiz and Chin-Chin Gutierrez, both depicting violence against women. In the first story, Sharmaine played a young girl placed under the care of relatives, only to suffer abuse. Meanwhile, Chin Chin portrayed a teacher whose past resurfaced when an ex-partner committed a horrific crime.  </p><p>Then, in 1997, <em>&quot;Kapag May Katwiran... Ipaglaban Mo: The Movie II&quot;</em> hit theaters with two stories centered on marginalized individuals seeking justice. Carmina Villaroel starred as an illiterate housemaid who suffered police brutality after being falsely accused of kidnapping her ward. The second story featured Wowie De Guzman as a man determined to demand justice for his brother&#x27;s  murder despite the suspects belonging to a powerful family.  </p><p>To adapt to the digital age, <em>&quot;Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> expanded its reach through the Facebook supplementary program, <em>&quot;Ipaglaban Mo: Files,&quot; </em>in 2018, where the lead stars of each episode shared additional information and context about the featured cases.  </p><div> </div><div><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FIpaglabanMoABSCBN%2Fvideos%2F3960359793981566%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0" width="560" height="314" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div> </div><p>Beyond television,<em> &quot;Ipaglaban Mo!&quot;</em> also extended its public service through ABS-CBN&#x27;s Tulong Center, where Atty. Jose offered free legal consultations. As he wrote in his newspaper column, &quot;...with our additional public service free legal advice at the ABS-CBN Tulong Center, one of my dreams in life has become a reality — to be able to help and reach out to as many people as possible by sharing with them whatever knowledge God gave me in my chosen profession.&quot; </p><p>Born on April 7, 1938, Atty. Jose was happily married and had six children. He earned his degrees from the University of Santo Tomas and the Ateneo de Manila University before being admitted to the Philippine Bar with a score of 84.9 percent.
