<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/life/01/18/011817-imeldamissu.jpg"/><figcaption><div class="embed-desc">Imelda Marcos with the winners of Miss Universe 1974. <em>Photo from &quot;Edifice Complex: Power, Myth and Marcos State Architecture&quot; (Gerard Lico, 2003)</em></div></figcaption></figure></div><p>The winners of the 1974 Miss Universe pageant held in Manila spent a night at then First Lady Imelda Marcos&#x27; beach house in Tolosa, Leyte.</p><p>On July 27, 1974, Miss Universe 1974 Amparo Muñoz and the pageant runners-up flew to Leyte on board a Philippine Air Force plane.</p><p>They were welcomed by a group of 500 boys and girls, who danced the curracha, a Samar-Leyte folk dance.</p><p>The beauty queens were welcomed by Marcos, who offered her beach house in Olot to provide some respite from their busy schedule.</p><p>After staying in Leyte, the group also visited Cebu, where Muñoz was presented with a key to Lapu-lapu City by the city&#x27;s first lady, Norma Patalinghug.</p><p>The group proceeded to Iloilo City for a quick visit following an overnight stay in Cebu.</p><p>Muñoz, in a press conference in Leyte, said she did not realize that the Miss Universe pageant was well-known all over the Philippines, thinking it was only popular in Manila.</p><div><em>Source: Manila Bulletin, July 1974</em></div>
