<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img figcaption="" src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/miss-universe/01/19/1974-miss-universe-011917.jpg"/><div class="embed-desc">Miss Universe 1974 winners. <em> Photo from Manila Bulletin, July 1974</em></div></figure></div><p>MANILA -- A typhoon did not stop the Philippines from hosting the 1974 Miss Universe pageant.</p><p>Typhoon Iliang (international name: Ivy) was battering the northern part of Luzon while the contestants of the beauty pageant were participating in the event.</p><p>The Philippines hosted the pageant a year after Filipina beauty queen Margie Moran was named Miss Universe.</p><p>The government originally planned on building an open-air amphitheater at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex, but since the pageant will be held during the rainy season in the Philippines, a closed theater (later known as the Folk Arts Theater) was built instead.</p><p>Iliang left 20 people dead, with at least 80 missing. Fifty percent of houses in Baler were also destroyed.</p><p>The <a href="http://pdf.usaid.gov/pdf_docs/PNAAY550.pdf">United States Agency for International Development (USAID)</a> estimated the amount of damage caused by the typhoon at $2 million.</p><p>While Iliang battered Central Luzon provinces, the 65 contestants of the 1974 Miss Universe pageant put their best foot forward in a bid to win the crown.</p><div><strong>Source: Manila Bulletin, July 1974; &quot;Edifice Complex&quot; (Gerard Lico, 2003)</strong></div>
