MANILA -- He described it as perhaps the "best contemporary piece of theater that was written in recent memory."

So it's no surprise that Andoy Ranay is both excited and scared to be part of the local staging of "Angels in America: Millennium Approaches," a Pulitzer-winning play about the devastating effects of AIDS that struck an entire generation of gay men in 1980s America.

Couple that with the fact that this is Ranay's first role as a theater actor in 12 years -- he's more known today as a director -- and one can get why he's getting butterflies in his stomach.

"I am here as a student all over again and it excites me and scares me. I trust my director, co-actors to be with me on this journey of learning more techniques and process to tell a story," he said.

He plays the role of Belize, an ex-drag queen and a registered nurse. He is the best friend and ex-boyfriend of Prior Walter, the story's main character to be portrayed by Topper Fabregas.

Asked about his preparations, Ranay said that reading up on his character has helped him a lot. He added that "observing and actually talking to real people makes me more connected."

The local production of Tony Kushner's "Angels in America: Millennum Approaches" is by Atlantis Theatrical, and will be staged starting March 22 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium of the RCBC Plaza in Makati.
