MANILA -- More Filipinos have been going online for entertainment amid the coronavirus-induced quarantine, according to Shopee, which observed greater demand for engagement on its platform.

In a statement, Shopee said its in-app games have become highly popular among Filipino users in recent months as they shop and play on their mobile phones.

It noted 70% more plays for Shopee Farm, an interactive game where users earn rewards for logging in regularly to water their plants virtually; and four times more plays for Shopee Shake where players can earn coins and save more while they shop.

Shopee also noticed more viewers on its streaming service. It said Shopee Live recently recorded 30 million views in a month, with users aged 18 to 50 watching in April.

"Shopee will continue to meet the evolving needs of Filipinos as the COVID-19 situation develops. As people stay home and increasingly rely on e-commerce for their daily needs, Shopee has continued to improve our platform and introduce new features to engage our users better," said Ruoshan Tao, head of marketing at Shopee Philippines.

Shopee recently kicked off its "6.6 Super Flash Sale," offering up to 50% discounts on different products until June 6.

Tao said it is introducing two new in-app games during the sale event to better connect with their users. These include Shopee Claw, which is inspired by an arcade game; and Shopee Poly, where users earn or lose points after rolling dice.
