MANILA - The University of the Philippines remains the country's top university even after it slipped in the annual rankings of UK-based Quacquarelli Symonds.

The state university was 384th in the 2019 ranking, lower than the 367th post it held last year, the British company said in its list released Friday.

The Diliman-based institution was the only Philippine contender to reach the top 400 of the list that consisted of 1,000 universities.

The QS ranking noted that UP offers 94 graduate and undergraduate courses and runs several centers of research, "many of which have been declared by the Commission on Higher Education as National Centers of Excellence."

Ateneo de Manila University, which came in second, also slid to the 651-700 range from the 551-600 last year.

De La Salle University also fell to the 801-1000 range, where the University of Sto. Tomas was also listed.

The 2019 world ranked US-based Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the top university for the seventh consecutive year, followed by Stanford University, Harvard University, California Institute of Technology, and University of Oxford.

University of Cambridge, ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, University of Chicago, and University College London complete the top 10.

Singapore's Nanyang Technological University kept its spot as the highest-ranked Asian institution this year at 11th place.

It is followed by National University of Singapore (12th), China's Tsinghua University (17th), Japan’s University of Tokyo (23rd), and University of Hong Kong (25th).
