Rajo Laurel stages Independence Day fashion show in Tokyo

<div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/news/06/13/fashion-show-1.jpg?ext=.jpg"/></figure></div><p>This year’s Independence Day proved to be a very fashionable day, as Rajo Laurel took Philippine fashion to international festivities. </p><p>The first occasion being the 71st Tony Awards, as Lea Salonga returned to the awards show as presenter, wearing a customized suit by House of Laurel. </p><p>The second occasion took place in Tokyo, Japan, where the Philippine Embassy led the celebration of the 119th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence with a fashion and talent showcase. </p><p>This was the first time since 1964 that a Philippine fashion showcase was hosted in Japan by the Philippine Embassy. Prior to Laurel’s show, the last designer to mount a fashion show was Jose “Pitoy” Moreno, the National Artist for Fashion Design. </p><p>This year, in partnership with Jewelmer and Philippine Airlines, the event was held at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, with a guest list close to 500 people, including 118 ambassadors. </p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/news/06/13/fashion-show-2.jpg?ext=.jpg"/></figure></div><p>“We just really want to show a different aspect of the Philippines to the world,” says Laurel, who, with the help of his family members, worked to organize and supply fanfare to this Independence Day event. “It’s our way of showcasing who we are as people, to really change the perception of who we are as a nation.” </p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/news/06/13/fashion-show-3.jpg?ext=.jpg"/></figure></div><p>The show itself was a lavish display of Philippine beauties, and not just because local top models like Maxine Medina, Jo Ann Bitagcol, and Jasmine Maierhofer walked the runway. </p><p>Along with Laurel’s gowns, local jewelry brand, Jewelmer joined the lineup with a stunning array of Philippine pearl jewels—a showcase perfect for June, the month of the pearl. </p><p>The show also opened with a tribute to Marawi, as the first model walked in a gorgeous, traditional dress made of Marawi fabrics. And of course, audiences were also given a sample of local musical talent, as both Denise Laurel and Nicole Laurel Asensio performed. </p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/news/06/13/fashion-show-4.jpg?ext=.jpg"/></figure></div><p>In a world that is increasingly becoming connected, carving a way for Philippine fashion into the global market is a continued effort. </p><p>“We’re doing our own little way to make some noise [for Philippine fashion]. The only way to start getting noticed is to actually get out here, and to do it,” says Rajo. </p><p>Ultimately, he says, it is about promoting how extremely talented the Filipinos are. </p>
