MANILA -- Can you drink and party like the Irish? Finnians Irish Pub in San Juan keeps the Irish spirit strong by serving alcoholic drinks aplenty, some Irish-themed food, and in keeping it local, Filipino comfort food fare.

With a drink menu spanning cocktails, whiskey (from Ireland and other parts of the world), and Irish beers (Murphy’s Irish stout or a Guiness stout anyone?), a quick visit had us eating some hearty chow with gulps of some dark brews.

Here were our standouts:

1. Pies

What proper Irish pub doesn’t have a meat pie? Common folk might find more comfort in the shepherd’s pie, but I found myself eating more bites of their Guinness pie (in photo). Who wouldn’t love diving into a layers of puff pastry to get to beef stewed in Guinness? I know I would. Since we’re on this topic, I would also like to have this meat stew with garlic rice and a fried egg too!

2. Honey Bourbon Ribs

Have a beer in one hand and a rib in the other, and you’ve got yourself a good ole fashioned good time! These ribs have a shiny dark glaze, speckled with sesame seeds. And while the bourbon wasn’t a prevalent flavor, I found the honey part of the bite melding perfectly with my Murphys, so this gets a vote.

3. Spicy Garlic Mushrooms

While I doubt that the Irish cook their mushrooms on a sizzling plate with a healthy amount of garlic, I’m sure they would approve of this treatment. You get what you expect, and you can’t go wrong with this drinking chow.

4. Buffalo Wings

Irish tempers are no match for Finnian’s buffalo wings, I say! These things are unapologetically spicy, lulling you first with the taste of butter on your tongue, a sticky sweetness comes right after, and then you feel it -- heat that pleasantly lingers.

5. Pork Sisig

If Irish pubs around the world should have stews and meat pies, here in the Philippines, any decent drinking place should have pork sisig. Pig face parts, chilies, garlic, onion, and a squeeze of calamansi -- Finians Irish Pub has fine-tasting pork sisig, which you guessed it, goes well with any alcoholic thing in the bar.
