Another notable face present was 1979 winner Lorraine Schuck. While she is now known for her own pageants – Miss Earth and Miss Earth Philippines – Schuck got her start in the industry at Mutya ng Pilipinas. </p><blockquote class="instagram-media" </strong></div><p>The commemorative book “Mutya: 50 Years of Pageantry and Purpose” takes readers through the glorious years of one of the country’s oldest pageants. It chronicles the group’s contributions in pageantry, fashion, Filipino pride, culture and heritage. </p><p>Edited by veteran pageant observer Armin Adina, it serves as a time capsule of the organization’s rich history: from its start as a fashion extravaganza to its evolution to become a beauty institution. The coffee table book also tells the stories of some of its best known winners like one of the pageant’s first queens, Alice Crisostomo, and 1993 Miss Asia Pacific winner Michelle Aldana. </p><p>The project serves as a vehicle for the organization to look back on its history as it looks ahead to a new era. At the helm of this all is the group’s new president, Hemilyn Escudero-Tamayo. </p><p>Escudero-Tamayo, who herself was among the daughters of Mutya, said the book shows “a renewed relevance in women empowerment, nation building, and positive transformation”. </p><p>Meanwhile, for the group’s new chairman, Frederick Yuson, it serves as a “reminder of the pageant’s roots and a compass to guide” it in its new future. </p><p>Mutya ng Pilipinas is set to crown its new set of winners on Sunday, September 16. The book retails at P2,000 and can be purchased from the group’s website and Facebook page. </p><p>Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Philippine Cancer Society.</p>
