a world of fast fashion and mass-market goods, style and sustainability are sometimes difficult to fuse. But Filipino designers are now using handwoven textiles, which not only promotes the artisan trade but also Filipino culture.</p><p>Designer Mitch Desunia brought the inabel fabric to life as she showcased her creations during Milan Fashion Week in support of the weavers of barangay Sabangan in Santiago town, Ilocos Sur.</p><p>Besides women empowerment, and maternal and child protection, Desunia also bats for socio-economic programs to revive the dying inabel-weaving tradition.</p><p>She believes that by featuring world-class dresses using inabel fabrics it can help local weavers get more jobs and achieve a sustainable source of income.</p><p>Inabel is a handwoven fabric native to Ilocos and boasts of rich culture and history. Its quality is at par with the tweed fabrics used by fashion houses such as Chanel and Prada, Desunia said in an interview with ABS-CBN News.</p><p>&quot;We just need to improve the designs from being too tribal to a bit fashion forward and put the right branding on inabel and, voila, it’s on board,&quot; said Desunia.</p><p>Desunia describes her pieces as a ready-to-wear collection for modern women who love to incorporate a classic elegant look in their outfits.</p><p>&quot;I have included the use of inabel fabric on my luxury line to put the spotlight on the beauty and quality of weaved fabric made in Ilocos, Philippines. It is high time that the weaving industry in the Philippines be noticed not only by Mitch Desunia but also by other luxury brands in the global fashion platform,&quot; she said.</p><p>Event organizer Paolo Distaso was amazed by Desunia&#x27;s creations as an expression of the the rich heritage of Filipinos.</p><p>&quot;Mitch Desunia during the Milan Fashion week 2019 brought an elegant but at the same time innovative collection with refined materials and is perfectly matched with the accessories, it has greatly impressed the Italian public for its freshness and modernity, a real discovery,&quot; Distaso said.</p><p>Keeping the native weaving tradition alive and combining heritage and modernity, Desunia believes that inabel and other indigenous fabrics have a future in the global fashion scene. </p>
