Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA — A local publishing house on Wednesday launched what they consider the first set of locally produced decodable texts composed of 300 books—150 books written in Filipino and 150 in English.Decodable texts are reading materials that are written to teach reading to children who are just beginning to read, and are &quot;simple books for beginning readers that include the grapheme-phoneme correspondences they have learned”, author Victor A. Villanueva explained.Villanueva wrote the Filipino books, while Daisy Jane Calado wrote those in English.Segundo Matias Jr., founder and publisher of Lampara Publishing House, Inc., which launched the books dubbed “Lampara Reads”, believes these will be game changers in addressing the &quot;reading crisis&quot; among Filipino children.&quot;I call it tragic na maraming mga bata na hindi marunong magbasa, may mga teenagers... na hindi marunong magbasa. And nagulat ako sa mga teachers na nagsasabi sa akin na ang book na binabasa niya Grade 1, pareho ng Grade 6; o Grade 7 ang binabasa. So ganoon ang problema, how can you fill that gap &#x27;di ba? So we came up with the decodable text,&quot; he told reporters during the book launch at the Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) 2024.&quot;Habang binabasa mo, makakatulong iyon sa bata kung ma-identify niya kung saan siya lulugar... Merong kwento sa probinsya, may kwento sa siyudad, may kwento sa pamilya, may kuwento sa kaibigan, may kwento sa mga alagang hayop. Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN NewsFor his part, Villanueva used what is called the &quot;Marungko Approach”, after the barangay in Angat, Bulacan where the method was taught in workshop.</div>“Hindi siya approach to teaching; it&#x27;s a sequence of letters,&quot; he explained.&quot;Ang background niyan, may mga teachers noon, gumawa sila ng research tapos sinabi nila ano iyong ideal sequence of letters to teach para matuto sila (children) ng letters at matuto magbasa. So they developed this sequence of letters.”The first letters in the sequence are M, A, and S.&quot;So ituturo mo... ito ang titik M, ang tunog niya ay &#x27;Mm&#x27;... Ito ang titik A, tunog niya ay &#x27;Ah&#x27;. Titik S, tunog ay &#x27;Ss&#x27;. So pag natutunan ko iyong titik na iyon, pag bumuo ka ng salita na gumagamit ng tatlong titik na iyon, ang assumption doon kaya ko siyang basahin.“So kapag sinulat ko iyong &#x27;a-m-a, ama&#x27;. So dahil alam ko iyong A - &#x27;Ah&#x27; - at M ay &#x27;Mm&#x27;, mababasa ko siya. Kaya iyong unang libro doon sa sequence, ganoon siya: &#x27;Sasama si Sam&#x27;. So kahit na ang haba ng salitang &#x27;sasama&#x27;, M-S-A pa rin siya,&quot; he added.For the English books, Calado used systematic phonics.&quot;Ang ganda ng systematic phonics is from simple words, phrases, sentences, and then iyan isang kabuuang kwento na siya so nako-konteksto iyong natutunan nilang tunog at salita,&quot; she said.&quot;Pang-introduce talaga siya ng letter sound... Intend[ed] talaga siya na may teacher or magulang na magbabasa ng kwento para i-introduce iyong letter sound or i-reenforce. Meaning kung naturo na iyong tunog ng &#x27;F&#x27; in English sa school or ng parent, pwede niyang gamitin iyong libro to further supplement that experience with the sound... So ang understanding, ‘pag na-master na niya lahat ng letter sounds, kaya na niyang magbasa ng three letter words,&quot; she added.<div>FIRST LANGUAGE, FACT CHECKING </div>At home, which should parents prioritize first: teaching English or Filipino?Villanueva said this does not matter, as long as the child learns to read and is taught in a systematic manner so that he or she remembers and gets it right.&quot;Pwedeng sabihin nila na dahil babad ako sa YouTube, so alam ko iyong mga salitang &#x27;yan. Pero hindi mo pwedeng sabihin na iyon ang kanilang first language. Kasi para maging first language mo siya, dapat siya iyong natural mong sinasalita, na kapag inapakan kita, sabihin mo: &#x27;Ouch&#x27; - kung talagang English iyong first language mo.“Pero kasi baka perception lang siya ng mga magulang na, &#x27;Ay ang first language nila ay English kasi nag-You-YouTube sila... So ang tunay na test doon, can they carry a conversation in that language or not?&quot; he shared.Meantime, Calado said that while books should be entertaining for children to like them, keeping the details factual is a must.&quot;Kasi siyempre ito iyong una nilang exposure with content. So hindi pwede tayong magkaroon ng claims na maaaring makalito sa kanila,&quot; she explained.“So dapat talaga kahit gaano kasimple, kahit konsepto lang iyan ng hayop na nakikita nila sa pang-araw-araw na buhay ay realidad iyon, ibibigay natin sa kanila.<div> </div><div> </div>
