Photo courtesy of Shaira Jamin PostreroCEBU — In the middle of chaos and falling debris during the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Cebu, one family in Barangay Paypay, Daanbantayan town, found hope and survival in the most loyal of companions — their dog, Luke.</div>Enrique Postrero was with his 8-year-old son when the ground violently shook just before 10 p.m. last September 30.“Yung grade 3 kasama ko. Hiwa-hiwalay kami [ng pamilya]. Nung umalog… tinawag ko. Pagtawag ko, eksakto nag-ano &#x27;yung dingding, biglang rumagasa. Bumagsak, dito kami pumunta,” Postrero told ABS-CBN News in an interview on Monday.“Yung batang maliit na grade 3, bale nakadistansya sa akin. &#x27;Yung aso na tinali ko diyan — si Luke — um-ano sa side namin. Nasiksik at tinamaan ang gilid ng ulo ng aso,” he added.As the walls of their house crumbled, Luke — tied nearby — instinctively ran toward Postrero and his son, shielding them from the collapsing debris.The dog was struck on the side of his body, but his quick action gave the family just enough time to crawl to safety.“Nag-iyakan sila [other family members]. Hindi ko rin alam ang masasabi ko sa time na iyon. Nagtaka na lang ako bakit buhay pa [si Luke],” Postrero recalled.Postrero and his son sustained minor scratches.Luke, however, suffered injuries to his legs and to the sensitive parts of his body.An animal welfare group later stepped in to cover Luke’s medical treatment.The loyal dog is now recovering at a veterinary clinic in Danao City.“Nandoon si Luke… tinreat &#x27;yung aso dahil hindi naman totally nabalian — naano &#x27;yung ugat dito sa likod at paa niya. May mga galos siya sa maselang bahagi,” Postrero said.When asked if he believes Luke saved them, Postrero answered, his voice cracking, “Siguro kasi dito ako sisiksik kasi dito ang may daan… Dito ako pupunta, eh nandoon siya.”Amid the fear and loss in northern Cebu, Luke’s story has become a symbol of loyalty and hope — showing that sometimes, heroes come on four paws.
