Past speakers have included tech heavyweights and industry insiders, making her inclusion on the roster a moment of pride not only for her team, but for Filipinos watching from across the globe.“I honestly didn’t think I had a shot,” Yu shares, recalling how she almost didn’t apply to speak. “I wasn&#x27;t sure my ideas were unique enough, but I figured I had nothing to lose by trying.”Her humility is matched only by the strength of her message: that what she’s built isn’t flashy, but functional — and, most importantly, it works. “It might help others too, particularly small business owners and women founders,” she says.<div>Building business across borders</div>Yu’s journey is anything but ordinary. Born in the Philippines but raised in Zambia due to her father’s work as an OFW, she returned home at age 15. After enrolling in De La Salle University in Manila with hopes of becoming a doctor, she realized medicine wasn’t her calling. “I couldn’t stand the sight of blood,” she admits with a chuckle, eventually switching to a degree in International Studies.In her early 30s, she moved to the Cayman Islands, where her tech journey truly began. “One of my favorite subjects was statistics — my brain works with algorithms and big data, so SEO came naturally to me,” she explains. She worked as an SEO specialist for a local company before being offered a job in Florida. But fate had a different plan.“All my clients asked me to stay in Cayman and start my own business. A few of them even invested in me,” she said. That leap of faith led to the founding of WOWebsites, which she set up as an independent venture in the Metro DC/ Northern VA area upon relocating to the US in 2013.<div>Merging SEO with web design</div>What sets WOWebsites apart is Yu’s insistence on integrating SEO directly into the web development process — an idea that came from her early frustrations in the field. “When I first started, SEO and web design were treated as two separate services. That never made sense to me. One without the other is often a waste of money,” she explains.Her company now offers tiered packages — Basic, Visible, and Optimized — which provide small businesses with both a well-designed site and the SEO infrastructure to make it discoverable. “It’s taken time to streamline our approach, but we’ve finally done it,” she says.These packages are designed with the small business owner in mind, many of whom are priced out of full-scale marketing solutions. The “Basic Website Package,” in particular, has been gaining traction in the U.S. and is poised to make waves in Southeast Asia if given the chance. If presented with the opportunity to give back to her homeland, Yu has a dream client in mind: “I would love to do the SEO for the Department of Tourism,” she says, adding that her outsourced team is based in the Philippines, where WOWebsites kept a physical office for over a decade before the pandemic prompted a shift to remote work.<div>Rooted, ready, and rising</div>Despite her accomplishments, Yu remains grounded. She’s candid about the challenges she’s faced in breaking into the U.S. market, and she’s honest in saying she’s still on that journey.But making it to the PubCon stage? “Being the first Filipino-born speaker at PubCon feels like a milestone — almost like a trophy,” she shares. “I’m both happy and proud. And I know my mom will be too. She’s always measured success by how far her children go and I know this moment will mean a lot to her.”Her advice to aspiring Filipino tech talents? “For anyone who’s ever felt underestimated or overlooked, keep in mind that the best kind of payback isn’t proving others wrong — it’s proving to yourself that you were always more capable than you believed. Just keep showing up, keep doing the work, and stay true to who you are. That’s what makes the difference in the long run.”
