MANILA — More Filipino and foreign tourists may soon be able to withdraw much needed cash from sari-sari stores and even in homestays as the Department of Tourism (DOT) and RCBC launched Tuesday their partnership to deploy more "automated tao machines" in tourists destinations nationwide.

ATMGo is a mobile terminal similar to a POS machine that lets people withdraw from establishments like sari-sari stores. Customers are then handed their money manually by the sellers or merchants.

RCBC said over 10,000 terminals have already been deployed all over the country. But under the partnership, the DOT will facilitate in bringing them to tourist sites and transportation terminals. It will also open the service to users of internationally issued cards which will benefit foreign tourists.

"No longer will a local vendor have to close her stall to travel to the next town just to withdraw payment. No longer will a tourist in a remote beach destination struggle to tip their boat guide or pay in cash for local food," Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco said.

"This is a transitional yet strategic step towards our broader vision for a fully digitalized economy where cashless transactions are accessible, safe, and seamless," she added.

Meanwhile, RCBC said this is the first manual cash disbursement for international cards via agent in Southeast Asia.

So far, terminals have been deployed in homestays in Siargao and sari-sari stores in Jala-Jala in Rizal and in sari-sari stores in Pakil and Liliw, Laguna.

These are also expected to help Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises since establishments like sari-sari stores are free to apply to become merchants.

For foreign tourists, ATMGo will soon accommodate internationally issued cards that are Visa or Mastercard-branded effective by July, RCBC said.

RCBC Executive Vice President Lito Villanueva also allayed fears on security.

"In fact even ‘yung mga sa southern Philippines na mga medyo highly sensitive areas kasi dahil nasa community sila, dahil kapitbahay nila, may respeto sila. Kasi bakit nila nanakawan ‘yung sarili nilang kapitbahay? E di mawawalan sila ng pera," said Villanueva.

With the need to input an OTP, there are also measures in place for cybersecurity, the RCBC and DOT said.

"RCBC has assured the integrity of this platform. And we trust that they will secure this platform to make sure that we avoid any instances of breach," Frasco said.

The bank stated that it is prioritizing financial education to help customers protect themselves from fraud.
