Salcedo Auctions sets records for Joya, Manansala at sale

MANILA -- Salcedo Auctions achieved new milestones during its “Finer Pursuits: Important Philippine Art & Rare Collectibles” auction held last Saturday, June 14, setting two new world auction records for works by National Artists Jose Joya and Vicente Manansala, it announced Monday.

Joya’s 1962 masterpiece "Flight" fetched P37,376,000, setting a new global record based on size for the artist. Manansala’s 1965 "Untitled (Carabaos)" also set a new benchmark with a hammer price of P12,848,000.

Additionally, a new auction record was established for Fernando Zóbel’s Erenos from his “Saeta” series, which sold for P28,032,000.

The bidding for Joya’s "Flight" was a highlight of the evening, drawing spirited competition from in-person, phone, and online bidders. The final price exceeded its presale estimate by over 400%, underscoring the robust demand for exceptional works of Philippine modernism.

The auction also saw strong results from pieces sourced from prominent estates, including those of a respected Philippine statesman and the late fashion icon Auggie Cordero — demonstrating the confidence placed by discerning sellers in Salcedo Auctions as a trusted platform for valuable heirlooms and artworks.
