Handout</div>MANILA — Theater director and cultural advocate Toff De Venecia is stepping down as managing artistic director of The Sandbox Collective to pursue postgraduate studies abroad, the company announced Wednesday.De Venecia, who co-founded Sandbox in 2014 with Anna Santamaria, will conclude his tenure with the upcoming production of “Side Show: The Musical,” opening July 26 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Black Box Theater in Circuit Makati. The production marks a full-circle moment for De Venecia, whose career began with the same musical over 15 years ago.Succeeding him as artistic director is longtime Sandbox marketing and PR director Sab Jose, an award-winning stage actress and theater professional with nearly two decades of experience. Jose, a Gawad Buhay nominee and Aliw Award winner, will lead the company’s upcoming season, which she said is currently in development.In a statement, Jose said she is “inspired” to take on the role, and hopes to build on Sandbox’s strengths in advocacy-driven theater while expanding its repertoire and educational initiatives. “Arts education is something I’ve always wanted to pursue and push for,” she said. “I’m excited to offer a playground where we can cultivate new work and talent.”De Venecia, who also serves as a congressman representing Pangasinan, is known for his leadership in creative policy and cultural development, having authored several landmark laws including the Philippine Creative Industries Development Act and the Eddie Garcia Movie Workers Welfare Act. He also spearheaded various arts and placemaking initiatives in his home province, including the Anakbanwa Arts Residency Program and the Galila Arts Festival.“I’ll be pursuing higher learning abroad to learn more about innovation, public policy and public value and hopefully apply what I learn there back at home when I return,” De Venecia said.
