Josh Mercado</div>MANILA -- In the past, when it came to addressing intimate health, women were encouraged not to be too proud since they were held to a certain level.Today, things have changed for women, owing to gynecologists, intimate health advocates, and all women who dared to say, &quot;It should be discussed.&quot;The more women discuss intimacy, their pelvis, bladder, and related issues, the more women will be encouraged, particularly those who are menopausal and hesitant about it.Last July 24, Intima V and BTL Aesthetics, led by uro-gynecologist and Aesthetic Gynecology Society of the Philippines president Dr. Jennifer Jose, presented an event called Core To Floor to discuss pelvic floor muscles, which can cause urine leaks and poor sexual health if not cared for.The well-respected gynecologist told ABS-CBN News what it feels like for women to have urine leakage. “I deal with incontinence. There is stress incontinence. When you cough, when you sneeze, and when you laugh, you leak urine. This is common among women. We also have urge incontinence. When they feel like they want to go to the washroom and urinate, they don&#x27;t make it. They leak before getting there,” she said.These little signs of pelvic floor dysfunction could lead to something far more serious. “You will notice that with menopause, of course, from early menopause to menopause, the tissues become dry, right? The urethra becomes atrophic. It becomes open even at rest. So that&#x27;s why women in the older age, they meet and they have recurrent UTI,” she added.Dr. Jose went on to point out that women&#x27;s pelvic floor muscles weaken, particularly after childbirth. “When you give birth, the pelvic floor muscle weakens, and if it weakens, you suffer urine incontinence, fecal incontinence, and so on,” she told ABS-CBN News.Aside from these issues, women&#x27;s weak pelvic floor muscles might impair sexual performance. They may also leak urine during sexual intercourse, which discourages them from engaging in sexual activity.These are real-life cases that experts have observed when pelvic floor issues go untreated. However, many women suffer in silence because they are too ashamed or don&#x27;t know where to get help.“You know, intimacy can be addressed. Can I simply share with you that I was able to save 57 marriages unknowingly. Because I believe this is quite vital in married couples, right? People are quiet about it. But if you truly help them with intimacy, you know, that&#x27;s one thing that will keep them together. Because I believe that is also vital in their lives,” said Dr. Jose.“For so long, intimate health has been a quiet conversation.
