In a striking blend of modern design and engineering, a spiral staircase in Guangzhou has secured a place in the Guinness World Records as the tallest indoor double-helix staircase. The structure is located inside the OneM Art Centre, a contemporary art hub created as part of the redevelopment of a former traditional computer mall. The staircase has become a centerpiece of the space, symbolizing Guangzhou’s urban renewal and its embrace of futuristic architecture. Footage from Tuesday shows the staircase, modeled on a DNA double helix, featuring two independent staircases that spiral around each other without ever meeting. Illuminated by intense red neon lighting against a dark, industrial interior, the structure creates a surreal, cyberpunk-style atmosphere that has made it one of the city’s most photographed spots. “It’s pretty amazing. The way they used the color red, and the visual of it through the middle of it, seems pretty spectacular,” said Todd, a foreign tourist visiting the site. He added that such designs reflect China’s push to stay at the forefront of contemporary architecture. Guinness World Records officially recognized the installation for the ‘tallest sectional height of an unsupported spiral staircase’, highlighting a single self-supporting segment that rises 11.995 meters without a central column. The full structure extends for 186 meters, reaching a total height of more than 31 meters. Walking the staircase offers a combination of height, geometry and light into what many visitors describe as a &#x27;time tunnel&#x27; experience. Beyond its record status, the installation has emerged as a public artwork and a landmark showcasing Guangzhou’s shift towards art-driven urban spaces. During the record-awarding ceremony held late December, the staircase was transformed into a performance stage, with dancers dressed in red moving along its spiralling steps, reinforcing its role as both an architectural and cultural statement.
