What began as a small skincare clinic just before the pandemic has since transformed into a full-fledged surgical practice, with Ysera Aesthetic Center steadily expanding its services and footprint in Quezon City over the past six years.Founded by Dr. Patrick Tan, the clinic, which opened on January 20, 2020, initially offered only skincare and non-surgical procedures before expanding into cosmetic surgery in the years following the lockdowns, as demand for more permanent solutions grew.&ldquo;We started with non-surgical procedures &ndash; botox, fillers, threads, laser treatments,&rdquo; Tan told ABS-CBN News.However, just two months after opening, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the clinic to temporarily shut down. When lockdown restrictions eased in 2022, Tan resumed operations and began offering surgical treatments, following training under the Philippine Association of Primary Skin Health Physicians (PAPSHPI).&ldquo;Ysera started very small, occupying only one unit,&rdquo; Tan shared. &ldquo;We expanded through the years. We added the medical doctors&rsquo; wing, that eventually became the surgical unit. We also have the office in one floor.&rdquo;When Ysera Aesthetic Center started, Dr. Tan and his business partner, Dr. Michelle Supapo, saw the potential of the location in Mayon, Quezon City, where there are not too many surgical clinics around.&ldquo;Dr. Supapo&rsquo;s younger brother was my classmate,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Dr. Supapo and I belong to the same skin health academy and we trained in the same association, so we decided to become partners in this venture.&nbsp;&ldquo;You don&rsquo;t have to become a dermatologist to practice skin treatments. It offers a straight program that&rsquo;s light and a bit easier, but you learn all the essential skills in putting up the clinic, treating skin diseases and other skin concerns.&ldquo;Most of our patients are really looking for a permanent fix or a permanent solution. Before, we were referring many patients to other doctors. Then I decided I would train for surgical &ndash; at the Philippine Academy of Aesthetic Surgery, a school that offers cosmetic surgery practice and training. After that, I started practicing on my own.&rdquo;<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1775778919594DOC-PAT-1.webp.png" style="width: 655px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="655">Dr. Patrick Tan</div>Tan took up Medical Technology for his pre-med course at the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) in 2011. After that, he went straight to Medicine also at UST up until 2015 when he graduated. His high school and grade school were spent at Angelicum College in Quezon City.Tan earlier did emergency residency since he wanted to become an emergency doctor. &ldquo;I trained for two to three years in emergency medicine and I learned how to manage stress well,&rdquo; he admitted. &ldquo;I learned how to do multi-tasking very well. That really helped me, but I didn&rsquo;t finish that. I switched into another specialty to aesthetic medicine.&rdquo;The pandemic time was a real challenge for Ysera Aesthetics Center. &ldquo;Everybody had a hard time then,&rdquo; Tan said. &ldquo;We survived just by selling skin care products online and I also started my surgical training at that time. I didn&rsquo;t have a hard time. I really enjoyed the OR (operating room) cases even if those are long hours.&rdquo;Tan didn&rsquo;t practice on body surgeries, which entail long hours. &ldquo;I really focus on facial surgeries &ndash; rhinoplasty, facial augmentation like implants on the chin, blepharoplasty for the eyes, face lift,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;As the clinic progresses, you will realize your forte, your specialty. I&rsquo;m leaning toward rhinoplasty and facial surgery.&ldquo;I want to do surgeries that are two to three hours at most. I want it quick, less chance of having complications. All surgeries have down time, though. Sometimes a week or two. Healing is very important during surgery. The first half of your results is the procedure itself. The second half that will determine the surgery is the healing process, immediately post-op, taking care of the patient.&rdquo;&ldquo;When you see patients who regain their confidence after the procedure, when they do their follow-ups and they give you feedback and said their lives were changed after the surgery, they gained added confidence after the surgery, that&rsquo;s a really big thing for me,&rdquo; he added.Rhinoplasty is the procedure that he is most proud about, giving patients their aquiline noses that make them regain their confidence. &ldquo;I can do rhinoplasty till the day I retire,&rdquo; Tan beamed.There are patients, however, who don&rsquo;t get satisfied or get disappointed with the procedures they did.&ldquo;You just have to learn how to manage those kinds of patients and those kinds of complications,&rdquo; said Tan. &ldquo;In the long run, you learn how to choose the patients whom you will accommodate to lessen complications.&ldquo;Sometimes, I do adjustment in the first six months. You can call that warranty, as needed in a way. If a patient wants to have a higher or slimmer nose, I give it to them. That&rsquo;s part of my commitment to them.&rdquo;Tan turns down patients who have &ldquo;unrealistic expectations&rdquo; and he laments there are many around. &ldquo;Some of them have pegs to copy, like for the nose and even the face. They want to look like a certain South Korean celebrity for their facial structures. That&rsquo;s very different from Filipinos. There are patients who want very drastic change in their appearance. Sometimes, I don&rsquo;t think that will suit their features or profile,&quot; Tan said.&ldquo;Starting from the consultation alone, you can feel it will be difficult to deal with that patient. Of course, you have to be honest. From the consultation, you need to manage their expectation. If they still get disappointed, you have to tell them you are not the surgeon for them. You don&rsquo;t just accept a patient to the clinic. I refer them to another surgeon and let them know I&rsquo;m not the surgeon for them.&rdquo;<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1775778960613home-pic-1.webp.jpeg" style="width: 655px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-dragging" width="655">Dr. Patrick Tan, surgical doctor, and Dr. Michelle Supapo, non-surgical doctor, at Ysera Aesthetics Center&nbsp;</div>At Ysera Aesthetic Center, another seasoned doctor, Dr. Plutarc Encela, performs body surgeries such as liposuction, abdominoplasty, and breast augmentation.Tan wants to add services that will aid patients with their healing and maintenance after the procedure. The most rewarding remark from a patient is when they regained their confidence that was lost for so long.&ldquo;Especially for patients who have kids who were not able to take care of themselves because of aging or their work, but regained their youthfulness and confidence, that&rsquo;s a really big thing for me,&rdquo; said Tan.&ldquo;Their lives had a big change. That&rsquo;s a big compliment for me. Even for girls as young as 20 or those who had psychological trauma when they were young, they were honest to me. They disclosed that to me. After I did the surgery and they regained their confidence, that&rsquo;s enough for me.&rdquo;Tan said most of his patients come from Southeast Asia &mdash; including Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia &mdash; as well as the United States, Europe and Australia. Some travel to the Philippines specifically for surgery and typically stay for about one to two weeks before returning home after their sutures are removed.Because of their limited time in the country, he sometimes accommodates procedures even on Sundays when necessary.&ldquo;The demand for cosmetic surgery is high these days the whole year round. We try to accommodate as much patients as we can without compromising the quality. We do three to four or sometimes two to three [OR] patients a day,&quot; he said.The eldest of two boys, Tan looks up to his mom, an OB gynecologist, as his role model. She still works in the family-owned hospital in Bulacan up to this day. &ldquo;She&rsquo;s very hardworking,&rdquo; Dr. Tan said. &ldquo;She manages the hospital up to now.&rdquo;&nbsp;His younger brother, who is also a doctor, is in New York, while his dad is a businessman.On his free day, Tan spends it with his mom or he just relaxes and reads books. &quot;I just stay at home as much as I can,&rdquo; Tan said. &ldquo;I go shopping occasionally. I just buy the essentials, the things I need. I&rsquo;m not maluho [luxurious]. I&rsquo;m not doing retail therapy.&ldquo;I enjoy what I do. Today is an okay day. I&rsquo;m not tired even with the surgeries. During ORs, that&rsquo;s the time when I&rsquo;m most relaxed and happy. What I do doesn&rsquo;t bore me or makes me tired.
