Handout photo"/>Display of intricate vintage pendants and filigree jewelry at a flea market in Lisbon, Portugal, where Philippine representatives attended workshops and other activities related to jewelry-making and preservation. Handout photo</div>A school-based project focused on authenticating, modernizing and preserving traditional Filipino fine jewelry has received funding from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).In a statement, the DOST said it has awarded a grant to De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde for the project, which seeks to use advanced tools and digital technologies to preserve traditional Filipino fine jewelry.The grant will also support the documentation of heirloom jewelry forms, regional design motifs and production techniques across major jewelry-producing areas in the Philippines, the DOST said. It will also incorporate technologies such as 3D visualization, computer-aided design and 3D printing.The initiative aims to establish standardized specifications for tamborin — a traditional Filipino craft — and filigree jewelry, develop authentication measures for Philippine heirloom fine jewelry, and provide training for artisans, educators and industry stakeholders.<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/177666229318602. Arlindo Moura_s workshop.jpg" style="width:633px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="During their stay in Portugal, the Filipino representatives also attended jewelry making workshops."/>During their stay in Portugal, the Filipino representatives also attended jewelry making workshops.</div>It also seeks to build digital archives of traditional pieces and strengthen the “Made in the Philippines” identity in the fine jewelry markets.As part of the program, four representatives from Benilde attended training in Portugal, a country known for championing filigree making.&quot;We aim for Benilde to be one of the champions of cultural preservation by facilitating the transfer of traditional techniques, making them accessible across various industries, and contributing to the continued enrichment of Filipino identity,&quot; said Christine Cheryl Benet, director of Slim&#x27;s Fashion and Arts School at Benilde.The group also took part in collaborative exchanges with the Associação de Ourivesaria e Relojoaria de Portugal (Portuguese Association of Goldsmiths and Watchmakers), an organization representing goldsmiths, jewelers and watchmakers that plays a key role in preserving Portugal&#x27;s jewelry traditions.They likewise joined a one-day filigree workshop at the Centro de Formação Profissional da Indústria de Ourivesaria e Relojoaria (Professional Training Center for the Goldsmithing and Watchmaking Industry), a leading institution for jewelry and precious metal craftsmanship.
