For Jennylyn Mercado, years in front of the camera taught her one lesson that would later shape her first beauty venture: healthy skin is non-negotiable for good makeup.“Sa lahat ng ginagawa ko — taping, shooting, kahit events — talagang nagme-makeup ako. Sa ayaw at sa gusto ko, I have to put on makeup kasi it’s part of my job,” Mercado said during the launch of DLN Skin in Quezon City.“Sabi nga nila, kapag artista ka, puhunan mo &#x27;yung face mo. Hindi puwedeng pangit ang skin, hindi puwedeng pangit ang makeup. Handout</div>But finding products that worked for her sensitive skin had long been a challenge, with many of her preferred brands unavailable locally.“Mayroon akong isang problema — I have very sensitive skin. At hindi lahat ng products, hiyang ako. Madalas, wala dito sa Pilipinas &#x27;yung products na gusto ko. Pupunta ka pa sa ibang bansa, magpapasabay ka sa kamag-anak, may FedEx pa sa ’yo, o mag-o-order ka online. Usually, hindi nagshi-ship sa Philippines. So ang hirap talaga,” she lamented.Between online orders and pasabuys from relatives abroad, Mercado said she eventually asked herself: “Bakit hindi na lang ako gumawa ng sarili kong product that fits my needs?”She envisioned a product that combined makeup and skincare while remaining easy to apply and blend.“I want a product that is easy to apply, madaling mag-blend sa skin, and most importantly, good for the skin. Gusto ko i-combine &#x27;yung makeup and skincare,” she said.Bringing that vision to life, however, took three years.“&#x27;Yung first year, &#x27;yun ang pinakamasakit sa ulo. Two to three weeks bago namin makuha &#x27;yung revisions. Kapag may problem, ipapadala ulit namin, then three weeks ulit bago dumating. So, &#x27;yung R&amp;D namin, &#x27;yun talaga ang pinakamahirap na stage,” she said.Drawing from years of wearing makeup for long shooting days, Mercado said she also wanted products that offered skincare benefits.“Kaming mga artista, sobrang tagal naming naka-makeup. Before, talagang babad ang makeup sa mukha mo buong araw nang walang benefits. Minsan, nagka-clog lang &#x27;yung pores mo. Sinisira lang niya &#x27;yung balat mo, lalo na kung sensitive ang skin. Naisip ko, tutal babad siya sa balat natin, bakit hindi natin lagyan ng benefits? Lagyan natin ng skincare. Lagyan natin ng SPF.”Mercado added that she also considered the Philippines’ hot and humid climate when developing the formula.“Marami akong products na na-try — Korean, Asian, European products. Pero para sa akin, ang pinaka-perfect na malapit sa bansa natin is Thailand kasi pareho &#x27;yung weather at humidity,” she said.The result was the DLN Intuitone Skin Tint, which combines makeup and skincare and contains ingredients such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, witch hazel leaf water, Vagestop, Mimiskin, MC-PDRN, and SPF 50.“Medyo matrabaho, pero sulit na siya. Its versatile, it comes in light, medium, and dark. You can use it as makeup or for a clean girl look,” she said.Mercado also said the line is gender-neutral, adding that her husband, actor Dennis Trillo, was among the first to test the products.“Si Dennis, isa sa mga unang nagsa-sample talaga. Ginagamit niya talaga,” said.While the skin tint marks DLN Skin’s first product, Mercado said it is only the beginning.“Ito pong skin tint na ito is only the beginning of more DLN Skin products to come. Expect natin this year, marami pa tayong ilalabas,” she said.
