With a mere eye contact, both performers know what needs to be done in front of the camera or onstage</div>There are also couples who have proven their strong partnership in musicals or concerts. They need not be a real-life pair, but when they sing together, they undoubtedly create musical magic with their voices.Shiela Valderrama and Arman Ferrer have become one of theater’s most compelling duos, known for a chemistry that makes every note, glance, and gesture resonate. From their first musical collaboration in 2017 to starring in productions like &quot;Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag&quot; and &quot;Rama at Sita,&quot; the pair has built a friendship and creative bond that transcends the stage.“We’ve known each other for about eight years,” Valderrama told ABS-CBN News. “We first got cast to sing at a concert, then not too long after, a musical.”Ferrer recalled that they started performing together in 2017 in Rony Fortich’s concert &quot;Best Seat in the House,&quot; where they sang &quot;Who I’d Be&quot; from &quot;Shrek.” That same year they were cast as the leads of director Joel Lamangan’s stage musical adaptation of the Lino Brocka classic “Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag” “You can’t forget your first,” shared Ferrer. “It was our first production together as a love team. And also it was a challenging production and as they say, you build a stronger bond with people whom you share these kinds of experiences with.”For Valderrama, “it was quite a tough experience for everyone, but because of that, the production really brought us together and we became great friends.”With the countless times they’ve shared the stage, Valderrama and Ferrer do not keep count of the number of times they performed together.“There’s been so many,” Ferrer said. “We’ve worked a lot together in concerts, musicals, public and private events.”“We’ve performed together quite a lot through the years,” Valderrama echoed, “from musicals to concerts and special events.”Valderrama and Ferrer will perform together anew in the one-night concert, “As We Are,” on Saturday, October 18, 8 p.m. at the Maybank Performing Arts Theater in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, which will offer audiences an intimate look at their artistry, friendship, and the years of musical magic they’ve shared. “‘As We Are’ is really our way of showing who we are as performers -- beyond the characters we usually play on stage,” said Valderrama. “Through the years, we’ve often been paired as guest or featured artists in different concerts and events, but this time, it’s finally our own show.“It’s about sharing our music, our journey and the chemistry we’ve built over the years. It also feels like a celebration of our partnership as a performing duo.”“The audience always see us as performers,” Ferrer added. “But in this concert, they will see who we are as individuals and how we are as best friends. It’s an intimate and personal concert.”At the helm of “As We Are” is Nelsito Gomez, who is also writing the script. Musical director is Ejay Yatco.Even after years of performing together, both Ferrer and Valderrama still keep a list of dream stages they hope to conquer.For Ferrer, one of those is the Proscenium Theater at Rockwell. “I saw performances there and I just love the acoustics in the concert hall,” he said. “It’s also a good venue to do classical music. Hopefully, when the new CCP [Cultural Center of the Philippines] opens, I can perform again there.”He also delights in performing at The Theater at Solaire, the Samsung Performing Arts Theater, and the Metropolitan Theater — spaces that, he said, continue to inspire him as an artist.Valderrama shares that same hunger for discovery. “I love performing in new theaters,” she said. “There’s always an excitement and energy that comes with discovering a new space.” Her own dream list includes the Proscenium and the soon-to-reopen CCP, as well as iconic venues abroad like London’s Royal Albert Hall and Australia’s Sydney Opera House.While both dream of new stages, their proudest moments remain those when they represent the Philippines to the world. “All the Disney shows, ASEANs, and APECs that we sang in are proud moments because the world can see and hear what Filipino talents can do,” said Ferrer.Valderrama feels the same sense of pride. “There’s such a deep sense of honor in bringing Filipino talent to international audiences,” she said. “I also feel incredibly proud whenever I have the opportunity to perform works of and work alongside our National Artists. It’s always a privilege to be part of something that celebrates Filipino artistry and excellence onstage.”
