HINGA THE ARCHITECTURE OF PAUSE

<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1779289698079HINGA 1.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>At WorldBex 2026 held in March, amid the movement of crowds, conversations, and displays inside the World Trade Center, there stood a quieter kind of space. Dome-like, understated, and almost meditative in its presence, HINGA invited people not to consume more stimulation, but to pause. </p><p>Created by National President, Philippine Institute of Interior Designers, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/cecil_ravelas/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">IDr. Cecil Ravelas</a> for <a href="https://www.redinteriordesign.co/ourperspective" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Red Interior Design</a>, HINGA was conceived as more than an installation. It was an exploration of how design can shape emotional experience and how spaces can influence the way we feel, think, move, and even breathe. </p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:513.865px;display:block" width="513.865"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1779290528181Cecil Ravelas Photographed by Jo Ann Bitagcol.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:513.865px;height:auto" width="513.865"/><span class="fr-inner"><em>IDr. Cecil Ravelas, President of Philippine Institute of Interior Designers | Photographed by Jo Ann Bitagcol</em></span></span></span> </div><p>“Many of the environments we inhabit today are designed for speed, efficiency, and constant stimulation,” observes Ravelas. “Very few spaces allow us to pause.” Yet throughout her design practice, stillness, calm, and quiet have become defining qualities of her work. “I have always been interested in how spaces influence how we feel, think, and move through the world. I believe spaces carry energy, and they shape our inner state in ways we often do not immediately recognize.” </p><div><strong>The Architecture of Pause </strong></div><p>That philosophy became even more urgent for Ravelas when she began recognizing a contradiction in many contemporary environments. </p><p>“I felt that tension most when I realized that many of the spaces we were creating were efficient, beautiful, and highly functional, yet they were also exhausting. Hotels, restaurants, offices, and even homes were becoming more stimulated, more layered, and more &#x27;Instagrammable,&#x27; but not necessarily more calming.” </p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1779289740300HINGA 2.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>She adds, “I began noticing how people would walk into a space carrying stress, fatigue, and mental noise, and there was nothing in the environment asking them to soften or slow down. That realization shaped HINGA. I wanted to create a space that was not about excess, but about permission- permission to pause, to breathe, to rest, and to simply be. That is why the design is intentionally restrained. The materials are humble, the forms are quiet, and there is softness in the way the space unfolds. HINGA is really the architecture of pause.” </p><p>The word <em>hinga</em> itself carries emotional weight in Filipino culture. More than a literal act of breathing, it is often spoken as comfort, concern, or care. It is what we say to someone overwhelmed, grieving, anxious, or tired. </p><div><strong>Hinga Ka Muna</strong> </div><p>For Ravelas, that emotional understanding became central to the project.</p><p>“’Hinga’ is such a powerful Filipino word because breath is our life force. It is the quiet rhythm that keeps us alive, grounded, and connected to ourselves. When we pause to breathe, we create space to feel, to heal, and to return to what truly matters. In many ways, breath is not only survival it is restoration.” </p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1779289771419HINGA 3.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>She elaborates, “That is why, when we tell someone ‘<em>hinga ka muna</em>,’ it means more than simply taking a break. It is an expression of care. It is what we say to someone who is overwhelmed, grieving, anxious, or simply tired. It is our way of saying: pause, soften, rest, and come back to yourself. In many ways, it reflects something deeply Filipino: our instinct to nurture, comfort, and hold space for one another. Today, especially in fast-moving cities like Makati or Manila, people are constantly overstimulated. We move from traffic, to screens, to work, to noise, without ever truly exhaling. HINGA responds to that reality. It asks how design can become a gentle interruption to that pace. Even in the busiest city, a space can still offer stillness. Rather than relying on opulence or spectacle, Ravelas intentionally worked with raw, humble, and familiar materials. Plywood, one of the most common and accessible building materials in the Philippines, became the foundation of the structure. </p><p>Designing and building HINGA became, in many ways, a meditation on materiality itself. </p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1779289955442HINGA 5.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>The installation embraced softness, restraint, and simplicity, allowing the emotional experience of the space to emerge without visual excess. In doing so, HINGA challenged the notion that meaningful design must always come from rare or expensive materials. </p><p>Beyond aesthetics, the project was also grounded in sustainability and circularity. HINGA was designed using a modular construction system that allows it to be dismantled, reused, and reconfigured for future presentations rather than discarded after a single exhibition. The concept can evolve into many forms: a contemplative room, a wellness pavilion, a quiet garden sanctuary, or even a pause point within larger public environments such as offices, schools, hospitals, cultural institutions, and residential developments. </p><p>The activities imagined within HINGA are intentionally gentle: meditation, breathwork, sound healing, journaling, quiet reflection, or simply sitting in silence. As Ravelas explains, these are not rigidly programmed experiences, but invitations. </p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/lifestyle/people-culture-events/2026/5/14/national-heritage-month-2026-kicks-off-in-in-angono-rizal-1155" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: National Heritage Month 2026 kicks off in Angono, Rizal </a></div><div><strong>Beyond Performative Wellness </strong></div><p>At a time when “wellness” has increasingly become a buzzword in architecture and hospitality, Ravelas also hopes HINGA encourages the design industry to rethink its priorities. </p><p>“If I could challenge architects, developers, and brands to rethink one thing, it would be to stop treating wellness as an amenity and start treating it as a human need. </p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1779289983881HINGA 4.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>Too often, wellness design is reduced to adding plants, a gym, a spa, or a meditation room. But true wellness is much deeper than that. Wellness is really about experiencing space. It is about how a space makes people feel every day. Does it allow natural light? Does it support rest? Does it reduce noise? Does it make people feel calm, connected, safe, and cared for?  I think what we are getting wrong is that we often design for appearance before experience. We create spaces that photograph beautifully but do not necessarily feel good to live in. Real wellness is not performative. It is found in good air, quiet acoustics, thoughtful proportions, natural materials, emotional comfort, and spaces that allow people to slow down and reconnect with themselves.” </p><p>Ultimately, HINGA asks a simple question: where, within the spaces we build and inhabit every day, do we allow people to pause and breathe? </p><div><em>HINGA was launched last March 12, 2026 at WorldBex.
