Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA — Veteran broadcast journalist Karmina Constantino revealed that journalism was not originally part of her career plan, as she looked back on her three-decade journey in the news industry.In an interview on “Oh My Gan!,” Constantino shared that she initially dreamed of becoming a filmmaker or screenwriter after taking up film at the University of the Philippines.“I wanted to be a filmmaker or a screenwriter. That’s what I really wanted to do. Alam mo, pag nagsusulat ako, nawawala ako. I get lost in my imagination and writing a story,” she recalled.Constantino considered pursuing a career in advertising after graduation, but her mother encouraged her to try broadcasting instead. She eventually applied at Sky Cable News, where veteran journalist David Celdran served as news manager.Although she was initially offered a reporting position, Constantino admitted that she did not feel prepared because she had no formal background in journalism.“I said, ‘I came from film school. I don’t know anything about journalism. Can you please give me the lowest entry as possible?’ So I started as a PA,” she said.From working as a production assistant, Constantino took on different responsibilities before becoming a segment producer and special features producer. Within a year, she was eventually tapped to become a news anchor.Constantino said her experience proved that she did not deliberately pursue journalism.“I didn’t go and seek out journalism. Journalism found me. I didn’t know that that was what I was doing already,” she said.What remained clear to her, however, was the value instilled by her parents and grandparents that every profession should contribute something to the country.“Kahit ano pang trabaho mo, kailangan merong para sa bayan,” Constantino said. “Hindi lang sa utak. Nasa puso, nasa dugo.”Constantino said she learned the principle not through lectures, but by observing the daily lives and actions of her parents and grandparents.“It wasn’t as if we were sat down and indoctrinated. It was in the daily doing of my parents and my grandparents. Growing up just seeing that, that became our natural environment,” she explained.After 30 years in broadcasting, Constantino said she still does not feel as though she has worked a single day because of how much she loves her profession.“My husband would always tell our kids that he hopes they would find something that would make them never work a day in their life, like me,” she shared.“I’ve never felt that I worked a single day because that’s just how much I love what I do.”“I look at my kids and I look at the family that my husband and I have been able to build. That in itself is a recognition already,” she said.Constantino also opened up about why she continues to ask difficult questions and hold public officials accountable during interviews.“Don’t waste the time of your viewers. I know I have a job to do,” she stressed. “It’s one minute till midnight, hindi pa rin natin maayos-ayos yung sitwasyon ng bansa natin. These so-called public servants continue to not really put the people first.”Constantino said journalists must take every opportunity to demand accountability from those in power.“For every chance that you get to hold them to account, you take that. Yun lang naman ginagawa ko,” she said.Although many viewers describe her as brave and fearless, Constantino said she is simply fulfilling the responsibility that comes with her profession and platform.“We are just privileged to have the platform that we have and the job that we have,” she explained.Constantino said she was raised to respect people in positions of power without being afraid to challenge them.“Respect authority, yes, but never ever be afraid to question authority. Kung may mali, may mali. Ganun lang ’yun,” she said.Asked what could make her stop fighting, Constantino answered that nothing could silence her commitment to the country.“I would fight for this country until my last breath,” she declared.However, Constantino said she may eventually step away from broadcasting when she finds happiness in other parts of life, such as caring for her future grandchildren or traveling with her husband, Noel Torres.“Pag hindi na ako happy dito, hindi na,” she said. “But anong magpapatigil sa akin lumaban?
