Pet lovers, prospective adoptive fur parents, and animal rescue volunteers gather at the Eastwood City central plaza in Quezon City on August 17, 2024, to celebrate National Aspin Day. Partnering with the volunteers of the Animal Kingdom Foundation, rescued Aspins are offered for adoption to qualified pet lovers willing to give the Pinoy dogs the love and care they need.  In addition to the adoption drive, the QC Veterinary Department also conducts a vaccination drive for pets and a donation drive for local shelters and animal welfare initiatives. MANILA -- As the celebration of National Asong Pinoy (ASPIN) Day marks its second year, pets and fur parents came together to advocate for more inclusive spaces and environments for Aspins.According to Atty. Anna Cabrera, executive director of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), it has been their observation that Aspins are usually left behind in pet-friendly spaces.Cabrera reiterated that Aspins are part the Filipino identity and should be treated as such.“Yung mga aspins, sila yung sariling atin. Dapat hindi sila second class citizens sa kanilang sariling bansa. Napuna namin pag dog lover, pet friendly spaces, puro mga pure bred, Shih Tzu mga maliliit na aso. Pero yung mga asong Pinoy parang hindi sila yung number one pet of choice,&quot; Cabrera said.She adds that as Aspin advocates, they aim to create a more inclusive space for Aspins and redefine what people usually think when it comes to Asong Pinoys.Cabrera adds, “Gusto namin mabago yung pananaw kaya nga namin binago yung term na askal. Hindi dapat nasa kalye ang mga aso. Kaya namin ginawang aspin, tayo mga Pinoy, Pinoy din sila. Maganda, talentado at very grateful sila pag na rescue.” Divine, a fur parent, recalls how they were able to rescue Taylor, a two-year-old Aspin who was still a puppy then, and a victim of a hit-and-run incident.After being rescued, Taylor has brought them nothing but happiness.“Excited po siya laging kumain tapos gusto po niya cuddles. Kunwari po lalabas kami iniwan namin siya saglit, pag-uwi namin kailangan may cuddles muna. Kasi po, nagtatampo siya, nag fi-face the wall po siya,” Divine said.Activities like the Palarong Pang-Aspin or Filipino-themed games aim to strengthen the bond between Aspin fur parents and their pets.<div></div>
