MANILA - Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. will spend his last days as a lawmaker inside the Philippine National Police Detention Center after the Sandiganbayan denied his request to attend the final sessions of Senate.

In a motion submitted on May 31, 2015, Revilla asked the anti-graft court's permission to allow him attend the last sessions of the 16th Congress. The senator's six-year term will end on June 30.

But the Sandiganbayan refused to grant his request and explained that as a detention prisoner whose bail plea has been denied, Revilla "cannot practice (his) profession, nor engage in any business or occupation, or hold office , elective or appointive, under detention."

The Sandiganbayan added that detention prisoners like Revilla may only be allowed to leave the detention facility under "emergency or compelling" circumstances.

Revilla has spent almost half of his tenure under detention after being accused of plunder over his alleged misuse of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF). He is accused of pocketing P224 million in public funds after diverting his PDAF to spurious non-government organization which failed to deliver the intended assistance to beneficiaries.

The Sandiganbayan also denied the same request of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, another lawmaker detained over alleged involvement in the P10-billion pork barrel scam.
