Duterte to visit India for ASEAN summit

MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte is set to visit India this month for his first foreign trip of the year, his spokesperson Harry Roque said Wednesday.Roque said Duterte would visit India on the third week of January to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations - India Commemorative Summit with other regional leaders.He said the President may also visit South Korea, Israel, and Australia in later months, but details for these trips are still being ironed out.“I think these are planned visits. So far, it’s being discussed between the Department of Foreign Affairs and the countries that have invited the President,” Roque said in a news briefing.“It’s not yet definite but I know that it has been mentioned ‘no. And these visits of course will have very specific goals, and part of a state visit or working visit is always to promote trade and investments as far as the Philippines is concerned.”Duterte had hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi among other world leaders in Manila in November during the ASEAN Summit.The two leaders held bilateral talks on the sidelines, during which Duterte asked Modi to encourage the flow of Indian investments into the Philippines.On the first year of his presidency, Duterte had made several travels abroad, attending important regional meetings and making his debut in the international scene.The President&#x27;s trips abroad have cost the government millions but Malacañang said this is nothing compared to the aid and investment pledges he has brought home.
