MANILA - For Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, offers for modeling stints is another way for him to help his city.

"It's for public service. I never gained economically. Kung kinakailangang gahasain ko katawan ko itulong lang sa tao, bakit hindi?" Moreno, a former actor, said on ANC's Headstart on Tuesday.

(If I need to take advantage of my body just to help people, why not?)

The first-term mayor, who rose to fame in the '90s as an actor, said he is not afraid of criticism for taking on several modeling and endorsement jobs on the side.

"Kapag malinis konsiyensiya mo, saka alam ng mga company na 'yun they know I have never touched [the money]... it's not even addressed to me. It's addressed directly to the beneficiaries," he said.

Moreno said he has earned around P40 million out of endorsement contracts he has accepted but has not seen a single centavo of the money.

His pay, he said, went directly to beneficiaries: around P32 million to the Philippine General Hospital and some of the amount to quake-hit Cotabato.

He said he has more endorsements to come.

"Kahapon lang may pinirmahan ako. Nagpasintabi naman ako. Pasensiya na kayo baka manawa kayo sa mukha ko sa EDSA," he Moreno, whose endorsement billboards could be seen along the busy thoroughfare.

He clarified that his intention is not for personal gain.
He also believes that what he is doing can be replicated by other local governments too.

"It's needed, in return of gain to be utilized for public service," he said. "I think anybody can do that also."

Aside from going around the city to inspect markets and streets of trash and obstruction, the mayor has been very active on Facebook, with his following now at 2 million.

"When you see us going around, we're trying to send a message to you, you are welcome to suggest, you are welcome to report. Inilalapit namin ang pamamahala sa pamamagitan ng screen (We are bringing governance closer to the people through the screen)," he said.
