MANILA -- Quezon City will be more prepared for Pride March this year, after the 2024 edition of the event was cut short due to inclement weather that caused concerns for the safety of performers and attendees.

This was the assurance given by Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, even as she noted that the local government has prepared multiple events throughout the month for the queer community as well as allies.

"With tents, with covered areas and pati 'yung sound system natin na kahit na umulan, we will make sure it's protected at pwede pa rin mag-party at mag-enjoy at mag-concert kahit umulan."

The 2024 Pride March, dubbed "Love Laban 2 Everyone," was paused around 6:00 p.m. on June 22 due to heavy rains. With electrical and sound equipment compromised, organizers decided to cancel the rest of the program by 8:00 p.m.

The development meant that performers such as BINI, Vice Ganda, Gloc 9, Marina Summers, and Juan Karlos were unable to take the stage.

This year's Pride March -- "Lov3Laban sa Diliman" -- will be held at the UP Diliman campus on June 28.

"I would like to thank Chancellor Carlo Vistan and of course President Jijil Jimenez for allowing us to do it there. Kasi medyo hindi na tayo kasya sa Quezon Memorial Circle," said Belmonte. "Kaya sa UP Diliman na tayo gagawa ng ating Pride. And this will have everything. The march, yung ating trade fair, and syempre yung Pride Night natin."

According to Belmonte, the Pride Night will cover other areas of the UP Diliman campus, and not just the Sunken Garden. She also assured that they are coordinating with the local law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of the event.

Before the Pride March, Quezon City will host a Pride Run on June 7, in cooperation with RunRIO. There will also be a business summit for queer entrepreneurs.

Aside from these events, Belmonte is also looking to pass a new ordinance in Quezon City that will ensure healthcare for all, regardless of gender or orientation. This project comes after QC launched its "Right to Care" card in 2023, which uses the Special Power of Attorney to help queer couples decide on medical concerns.

"Every year, I have something that I offer them," said Belmonte. "Two years ago, it was the 'right to care' card, and last year, I had another project for them, the graduation rites."

According to organizers, over 200,000 people attended last year's Pride in the QC Memorial Circle, and Belmonte is hopeful that the community and their allies will again show up this year to celebrate and advocate for their rights.

"So sa lahat po ng gustong umattend, sumuporta po sa community ng LGBTQIA+, mga allies and friends, lahat po kayo ay inaanyayahan ko po, na dumalo sa June 28 sa UP Diliman," said Belmonte, "Para ipagdiwang ang pride at para i-advocate na sana sa susunod na kongreso na sana meron tayong kampiyon dyan na makikipaglaban para mapasa na finally, ang SOGIE equality bill."
