SHARIFF SAYDONA MUSTAPHA – An improvised explosive device (IED) planted by unknown suspects at the side of the road in Maguindanao failed to explode and was recovered by authorities Wednesday morning.

Local troops were traversing the national highway in Barangay Nabundas, Shariff Saydona Mustapha, Maguindanao going to Barangay Tukanalipao, Mamasapano to offer prayers for the second year commemoration of the Mamasapano encounter when white smoke appeared at the side of the road just as a police car was passing by, said Senior Superintendent Agustin Tello, Maguindanao police provincial director.

Upon seeing the smoke, police immediately fired warning shots to prevent motorists from passing.

The IED that police recovered contained black powder as well as nails, which would have acted as shrapnel if it had exploded.

It may have been intended to do harm to police or army personnel passing by the area, the police said.

They suspect that the failed attack was the work of Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, Tello said, based on the signatures of the recovered IED components.

Despite the incident, members of the Maguindanao police provincial office pushed through with their prayer offering, commemorating the death of cohorts during a botched police operation in 2015.
