PAGASA retires typhoon names Ompong, Rosita, Usman

MANILA- State weather bureau PAGASA has retired 3 names of destructive typhoons in 2018, which left dozens of people killed and wrought billions of pesos in damage.Ompong, Rosita, and Usman will no longer be used in the future according to a resolution signed by weather bureau administrator Vicente Malano.PAGASA replaced the retired names with Obet, Rosal, and Umberto.A storm&#x27;s name is retired once it leaves at least 300 deaths or causes at least P1 billion in damage to crops or infrastructure, weather forecaster Jun Galang said.<a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/list/tag/ompong">Ompong</a>, which wreaked havoc in the Philippines in September last year, left over P33.9-billion in damage to agriculture and infrastructure. Eighty-two people perished.<a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/list/tag/rosita">Rosita </a>meanwhile left a trail of destruction in October 2018 with P2.9-billion worth of damage to crops and infrastructure and 20 people dead.The death toll during Typhoon <a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/list/tag/usman">Usman </a>in December reached 156 while damage to infrastructure reached P5.4 billion.The Philippines is battered by an average of 20 typhoons per year, most of which form over the country&#x27;s Pacific coast.<div>-- report from Johnson Manabat, ABS-CBN News</div>
