MANILA--Zamboanga City recorded 29 more cases of the novel coronavirus on Saturday, bringing total infections to 59.

The new cases included inmates and staff members of the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center.

The local government said it was coordinating with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology to contain the outbreak of COVID-19 at the facility.

Meanwhile, in Cagayan de Oro, health officials reported the city's fourth COVID-19 patient, a 21-year-old man from Barangay Lumbia.

Dr. Bernard Julius Rocha, medical officer of Northern Mindanao Medical Center, said the patient had spinal cord surgery on April 21 after a serious accident.

He was transferred to NMMC and underwent a medical examination before he was released.

However, the patient showed symptoms of COVID-19 and was admitted back to NMMC on May 1. He later tested positive for the disease, said Rocha.

The doctor said the patient, who had no travel history to places hit by COVID-19, is now in isolation and intubated.

Hospital staff and others who were exposed to him have gone on the mandatory 14-day quarantine to prevent possible contamination.

Health officials have conducted contact tracing to find those who were possibly infected by the patient. -- Reports from Jewel Reyes and Joey Taguba Yecyec, ABS-CBN News
