Ex-Speaker Prospero Nograles passes away

MANILA (7th UPDATE) - Former House Speaker Prospero Nograles has passed away, his son Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said Saturday. He was 71. &quot;Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of you for being a part of Papa Boy Nogie’s life and journey,&quot; said the younger Nograles in a statement. Karlo Nograles said his father succumbed to &quot;respiratory failure, secondary to pneumonia&quot; and that he &quot;passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.&quot; &quot;May we please ask for your continued prayers. He is finally at peace,&quot; he said. The wake will be held in Chapel 1 at Heritage Park, Fort Bonifacio, BGC Taguig from Sunday, May 5, to Monday, May 6, the family said. The remains of the former House Speaker will be flown to Davao on Tuesday, May 7.The younger Nograles described his father as &quot;a driven public servant who loved his family and faithfully served his constituents.&quot; The late Nograles was a lawyer who placed second in the 1971 Bar examinations. He represented victims of human rights violations during the regime of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, and then supported the campaign of the late President Corazon Aquino in the 1986 snap elections, according to a Palace statement. He was first elected representative of the 1st district of Davao City in 1989, a post he won again in 1995. He renewed the same mandate in 2001, during the presidency of the current House Speaker Gloria Arroyo, and was chosen to lead the chamber in 2008. When his term at the House ended in 2010, he launched a bid for the Davao City mayoralty, but lost to President Rodrigo Duterte&#x27;s daughter reelectionist Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. His legacy as a leader who used his voice to speak on behalf of the Filipino people will continue to inspire other politicians and leaders who are committed to serving their countrymen,&quot; he said.His daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and Malacañang earlier expressed their condolences to the Nograles family.&quot;Former Speaker Nograles was a pride of Mindanao. He was one of the leading lights of the political leaders in Mindanao,&quot; Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.&quot;Former Speaker Nograles will certainly be missed by his loved ones, friends and constituents.
