<p>MANILA - <strong>(2nd UPDATE)</strong> Former senator Edgardo Angara has passed away at the age of 83, his son Sen. Sonny Angara confirmed on Sunday. </p><p>On his Twitter account, the younger Angara said his father died &quot;from an apparent heart attack.&quot;</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Sad to say my father frmr Sen Edgardo Javier Angara passed on from this life this morning at the age of 83, from an apparent heart attack</p>— Sonny Angara (@sonnyangara) <a href="https://twitter.com/sonnyangara/status/995532060650422274?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 13, 2018</a></blockquote><div><script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charSet="utf-8" type="text/javascript"></script></div><p>The older Angara earned his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1958 from the University of the Philippines (UP), where he later served as president from 1981 to 1987.</p><p>He also took up Master of Laws at the University of Michigan in the United States.</p><p>Angara&#x27;s public career began when he became a delegate in the 1971 Constitutional Convention, where he authored constitutional provisions such as the protection of public domain from undue exploitation by developers. </p><p>He was a senator from 1987 to 1998, serving as Senate president from 1993 until 1995.</p><p>Angara was the lead proponent of the Free High School Act, the Government Assistance To Students and Teachers In Private Education Act, the Magna Carta for Health Workers, and the Breastfeeding Law, among others.</p><p>Under former president Joseph Estrada, Angara led the Agriculture department from 1999 until 2001, and had a brief stint as Executive Secretary in 2001.</p><p>Angara returned to the Senate in 2001 until he ended his fourth term in 2013.</p><p>On May 2017, he was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the country’s special envoy to the European Union. </p><ul class="op-related-articles">	<li><a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/05/17/17/duterte-appoints-former-senate-president-angara-as-special-envoy-to-the-eu ">Duterte appoints former Senate President Angara as special envoy to the EU</a></li></ul><p>He was also president of the Philippine Bar Association in 1975, president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines in 1979, and founding president of the ASEAN Law Association in 1980.</p><p>&quot;Mr. Angara’s contribution to nation-building was immense and his name will always be prominent in the pages of our country’s modern political history. He will be missed,&quot; Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement. </p><p>The Angara family is still ironing out funeral arrangements for their patriarch, Sen.
