MANILA -- President Rodrigo Duterte, the first Filipino leader from Mindanao, rallied voters in the south to support his chosen senatorial candidates, delivering a sweep for the pro-administration ticket.

The May 13 vote also saw the rise to national prominence of Hugpong ng Pagbabago, led by Duterte's daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.

Nine candidates endorsed by father and daughter were on course to win 6-year mandates in the Senate. Three independents won while all 8 bets of the opposition ticket, Otso Diretso, lost.

During the Marcos years, their Luzon bailiwicks were known to vote as a bloc, earning the tag "Solid North." Here is what data show about the "Solid South," the country's new power base.

1. Candidates backed by Duterte won by a landslide in Mindanao, taking 11 of 12 winning slots. Sen. Grace Poe, who campaigned as an independent, placed 9th. Nearly a quarter of the votes came from Mindanao.

2. How important was the Mindanao vote? Looking at total votes excluding Mindanao, Sen. Bam Aquino was in 9th place followed by Sen. Nancy Binay, former presidential adviser Francis Tolentino, Sen. JV Ejercito, and former Sen. Bong Revilla.

3. The President's allies were the major beneficiaries of votes from the south. Former Special Assistant to the President Bong Go topped 21 out of the 27 provinces in Mindanao while former national police chief Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa and Tolentino finished 2nd and 5th.

4. It was a sweep for Hugpong in Davao as the top 12 candidates in Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental all came from the party.

5. No Otso Diretso candidate made it to the winners' circle 12 in 50 out of the 86 areas identified by ABS-CBN Data Analytics (81 provinces, Metro Manila and 4 overseas absentee voting or OAV areas).

6. Otso Diretso was shut out in vote-rich areas in Metro Manila and Cavite. In Cebu and Pangasinan, only Aquino made it to the Top 12. Camarines Sur was the only province where Otso Diretso had more winning candidates than Hugpong.

7. Sen. Cynthia Villar finished number one in 34 provinces and was in the top 3 in 78 out of the 86 areas identified by ABS-CBN Data Analytics. She was also number one in Metro Manila and in the 5 most vote-rich provinces: Cebu, Cavite, Pangasinan, Laguna and Negros Occidental.
