<p>MANILA -- President Rodrigo Duterte, the first Filipino leader from Mindanao, rallied voters in the south to support his chosen senatorial candidates, delivering a sweep for the pro-administration ticket.</p><p>The May 13 vote also saw the rise to national prominence of Hugpong ng Pagbabago, led by Duterte&#x27;s daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio.</p><p>Nine candidates endorsed by father and daughter were on course to win 6-year mandates in the Senate. Candidates backed by Duterte won by a landslide in Mindanao, taking 11 of 12 winning slots. Sen. Grace Poe, who campaigned as an independent, placed 9th. How important was the Mindanao vote? Looking at total votes excluding Mindanao, Sen. Bam Aquino was in 9th place followed by Sen. Nancy Binay, former presidential adviser Francis Tolentino, Sen. JV Ejercito, and former Sen. The President&#x27;s allies were the major beneficiaries of votes from the south. Otso Diretso was shut out in vote-rich areas in Metro Manila and Cavite. In Cebu and Pangasinan, only Aquino made it to the Top 12. Sen. Cynthia Villar finished number one in 34 provinces and was in the top 3 in 78 out of the 86 areas identified by ABS-CBN Data Analytics.
