MANILA — A survey claiming that over 40 percent of Filipinos are not in favor of an impeachment trial against the Philippines’ Vice President show that the public is aware of the “pure political persecution” being waged against the Duterte family, Vice President Sara Duterte said on Tuesday.

Duterte gave the statement in a chance interview in the Hague, where she was asked to comment on a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showing that 42 percent of respondents do not support an impeachment trial against her, 32 percent hope to push through with the proceedings in the 20th Congress, while some 18 percent remain undecided on the issue.

“Siguro marami sa ating mga kababayan ang naiintindihan kung ano ang ginagawa laban sa akin at sa akin pamilya: It’s pure political persecution,” Duterte said.

“Dapat bang ibasura? Tingnan ng mga senator-judges yung mga arguments namin dahil marami kaming mga solid legal arguments kung bakit dapat i-dismiss itong impeachment complaint,” she said.

While the House of Representatives voted to oust the Philippines’ second-highest official in February, Duterte’s trial remains in limbo after the Senate returned the articles of impeachment to the House, citing possible constitutional and procedural issues on whether or not the 20th Congress can tackle a case filed during the previous Congress.

Some of Duterte’s allies in the Senate have moved to dismiss the impeachment case even before the trial proper began, but other lawmakers insist that the chamber should proceed with the trial and vote based on the evidence and arguments that will be presented.

In the SWS survey conducted between June 25 and 29, opposition against Duterte’s impeachment trial was lodged in Mindanao with 65 percent, followed by the Visayas with 46 percent.

In Luzon, 33 percent were not in favor of continuing with the ouster proceedings against the Vice President, while Metro Manila had an opposition rate of 32 percent.

The same survey showed that 59 percent of respondents are aware of the impeachment complaint filed against Duterte, while 44 percent believe the Senate, as an impeachment court, is deliberately delaying the impeachment trial.

DUTERTE TO ANSWER ALLEGATIONS EVEN WITHOUT TRIAL

Duterte said she is keen on answering allegations of corruption against her even if the Senate decides to dismiss her case without holding a trial, noting that her defense lawyers are continuously preparing for their appearance in the Senate impeachment court.

“They are continually preparing our witnesses for the impeachment, and continually gathering the pieces of evidence needed,” the Vice President said.

“Inaantay ko na magkaroon ng trial wherein doon ko sasagutin yung question ng bank accounts dahil sa ngayon ilegal yung pagkuha nila ng information sa bank accounts so wala akong obligasyong sumagot sa kanila,” she said.

“Pero kung hindi matuloy yung impeachment, I will endeavor na umupo para sagutin yung mga allegations nila sa impeachment through the public na,” she added.

The House earlier impeached Duterte over her alleged questionable spending funds lodged under the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education. Duterte’s outbursts and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as well as  some of his family members were also cited in the articles of impeachment transmitted to the Senate in February.

Duterte said she will not be in the Philippines when Senate resumes its deliberations on Duterte’s impeachment trial on July 28.
