MANILA - A Quezon City official said Tuesday he filed a resolution seeking to rename the La Mesa Dam Eco Park in honor of the late philanthropist and green advocate Gina Lopez.

Lopez, a former environment secretary and longtime chairperson of the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, championed the rehabilitation of the 2,700-hectare La Mesa Watershed and the development of its ecological park.

Under Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo's resolution, the La Mesa Dam Eco Park will be renamed Gina Lopez Eco Park.

"Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who care for the welfare of Mother Nature. It is only fitting that she be memorialized where her legacy continues," Castelo said in a statement.

Lopez led the planting of some 1 million trees around the La Mesa watershed, Susan Afan, managing director of the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc, earlier said.

Lopez was also known for rehabilitating the Pasig River; establishing the Bantay Bata 163, a helpline devoted to reports of cases of child abuse; and ordering the closure or suspension of 28 mines as President Rodrigo Duterte's first environment secretary.

She succumbed to multiple organ failure last August 19. A public viewing of her remains at La Mesa park was cancelled due to bad weather.
