'Neneng' threatens northern Luzon; another typhoon nears PH

MANILA - A low pressure area in the far north of Luzon has developed into a tropical depression that is expected to bring rains to the region, the state weather bureau said Monday.Tropical depression &quot;Neneng&quot; will bring occasional rains with gusty winds over Batanes and moderate to occasionally heavy rains over Babuyan Group of Islands and scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over Ilocos Norte and Apayao, PAGASA said in its 11:00 am bulletin.Tropical cyclone warning signal 1 was raised over the province of Batanes.PAGASA said residents in the affected areas, especially those living near river channels, in low-lying areas and in mountainous areas, should take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslides, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices.&quot;Neneng&quot; is estimated to exit the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday.The bureau is also monitoring Typhoon &quot;Mangkhut,&quot; which is still outside the country&#x27;s area of responsibility, but might enter by Wednesday.At 10:00 am, PAGASA said the weather system was packing maximum sustained winds of up to 140 km/h and gusts of up to 170 km/h. It is moving West at 30 km/h.In an earlier interview, PAGASA said Mangkhut may intensify into a super typhoon as it moves over the Pacific Ocean.
