MANILA - A powerful storm will move closer to the country's northeastern coast on Monday, bringing light to moderate rains to almost the entire Luzon and Western Visayas, the weather bureau said.

Tropical storm "Talim" will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., packing maximum sustained winds of 90 kilometers per hour and 115 kph gusts. It will be given the local name "Lannie."

The storm was spotted 1,655 kilometers east of Luzon at 4 a.m. according to PAGASA. It will hover off the northeastern Philippines before hitting Taiwan, according to a forecast model from the US Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

"Napakalakas nito," PAGASA meteorologist Aldczar Aurelio told DZMM. (This storm is very strong.)

Aurelio said the storm would enhance the southwest monsoon or "habagat," bringing rains to Luzon and Western Visayas.

Another low pressure area or brewing storm is being monitored inside PAR, some 440 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte, Aurelio said.

The weather system may be absorbed by Talim or it could intensify into a storm outside PAR., he said.
