MANILA - Most provinces in the Bicol region have been placed under a storm signal warning, as Tropical storm "Karen" (international name: Sarika) gained strength Friday.

Catanduanes and Camarines Sur were placed under warning signal number 2, and "Karen" may intensify into a severe tropical storm before it makes landfall on Sunday, state weather forecasters said.

Camarines Norte, Albay, Sorsogon, Quezon, Polillo Islands, Aurora, Isabela, Quirino, Laguna, Rizal, Marinduque, Burias Island, and Northern Samar were placed under warning signal number 1, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

PAGASA said the storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) with a gustiness of up to 105 kph. It was still moving west-northwest at 13 kph as of Friday morning, it said.

Karen is expected to make landfall over Quezon and Aurora by Sunday morning then cross Central Luzon.

In its 11:00 am advisory, PAGASA said the "estimated amount of rainfall is from moderate to heavy within the 400 km diameter of the Tropical Storm."

It also warned of a "possible raising of Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal #1 over Bulacan, Nueva Ecija and Nueva Vizcaya" Friday afternoon.

The warning signal may also be raised to number 2 in the Polillo Islands, Southern Quezon, Albay, Sorsogon and Camarines Sur, it said.

"Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the eastern seaboard of Eastern Samar," PAGASA warned.

Residents in Central Luzon, Northern Luzon, and even Metro Manila can expect moderate to occasional heavy rains starting Saturday morning.

On the other hand, those in Catanduanes and Camarines Sur may experience "stormy weather" beginning Friday night, said PAGASA.

The storm is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Monday.

Karen is the 11th storm to hit the Philippines this year and the third this month.
