MANILA—Authorities suspended operations of Makar Wharf in General Santos City after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao on Wednesday.

Philippine Ports Authority general manager Jay Santiago said General Santos felt a 6.7 intensity during the tremor, leading to the port's suspension.

The harbor did not sustain damage, according to inspectors. But they still held off operations there for the safety of staff and passengers.

"We are making sure that all persons are safe and that the integrity of structures are ascertained first. Operations are suspended until tomorrow (Oct. 17) morning to give way to a thorough inspection of all structures inside the port," Santiago said.

The earthquake hit Tulunan town in North Cotabato, and was felt by nearby provinces and cities, including General Santos, Davao City, and Zamboanga City.
